In a significant shift in the state’s public transport policy, the era of blue-and-white government buses is set to end, with all new state-run buses to be painted in a “vibrant saffron” colour. The announcement was confirmed by Transport Minister Arjun Singh, putting to rest speculation that had been circulating on social media in recent days.
Singh justified the move with a political and ideological argument, drawing comparisons with previous regimes. “During the CPM rule, buses were red, which signifies danger. Under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, buses were painted blue and white, which implies theft. We believe in nationalism, and saffron symbolises sacrifice. Therefore, the new government buses will be saffron,” he said.
Indications of the change had surfaced earlier this week when images of a saffron-coloured AC-58 route bus operating between Eco Space and Sonarpur went viral online. Similar visuals from the WBTC depot in Tollygunge, showing newly painted saffron buses, further fuelled speculation. The minister’s statement has now officially confirmed the transition.
The colour overhaul is part of a broader plan to revamp the state’s transport infrastructure following the change in government. Authorities have outlined several initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and restoring heritage systems within Kolkata and beyond.
Among the key proposals is a major push to revive the city’s iconic tram network. The Transport Department has drawn up a blueprint to reactivate nearly 70 old tram routes across the metropolis. Additionally, plans are underway to introduce a new tram corridor connecting Dakshineswar and Kalighat, aimed at easing daily commutes while also boosting religious tourism.
Further expansion of tram services has also been proposed for areas such as Salt Lake and New Town, along with other prominent corridors across the state. At the same time, the government is reviewing discontinued bus routes and increasing the number of buses on several new routes to enhance accessibility for commuters.
Officials stated that the combined measures are intended to modernise public transport while preserving the city’s heritage systems. The transition to saffron-coloured buses is expected to begin immediately with all newly inducted vehicles, marking a visible change in the state’s transport identity.
