A political controversy has surfaced in West Bengal over alleged irregularities in the voter list, triggering fresh tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The TMC has claimed that the name of a voter from Maharashtra, who had contested in 2026 Nasik Zilla Parishad elections, has appeared in the electoral roll of West Bengal’s Birbhum district, raising questions about the integrity of the voter list revision process.

According to TMC leaders, a woman named Ujjwala Burungale, reportedly a resident of Nashik in Maharashtra, has her name registered on the Maharashtra voter list. Despite this, her name was found on the 2025 voter list for Booth No. 194 under the Dubrajpur Assembly constituency in Birbhum.

The ruling party has also claimed that Ujjwala submitted an enumeration form during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and even received a hearing notice from election authorities, indicating an administrative attempt to include her name in the Bengal voter list.

Based on these allegations, the TMC accused the BJP of orchestrating a planned effort to include voters from BJP-ruled states into West Bengal’s electoral rolls. Party leaders warned that such practices could seriously undermine democratic processes and demanded immediate intervention by the Election Commission.

The BJP, however, has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.

Meanwhile, election officials confirmed that hearings are currently underway for around 1.26 crore voters as part of the SIR process across the state. According to sources in the Election Commission, it has been observed that in several cases, documents other than the 13 prescribed ones — such as bank passbooks, ration cards, LPG books and job cards — have been submitted and accepted during verification. As per Election Commission rules, Form 7 is mandatory for deletion of a voter’s name, along with proper documentation for transfer to another location.
