With the Delhi assembly elections less than a fortnight away, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday 'pledged' to 'eliminate' unemployment in the capital within five years if voted back to power.
In a video message, the former chief minister outlined his vision for Delhi, emphasising the creation of employment opportunities as his top priority. "My top priority will be to provide employment to our youths. Our team is drafting a detailed plan to address the issue of unemployment," Kejriwal stated.
Citing the achievements of his party in Punjab, where the AAP formed the government in 2022, Kejriwal claimed, "The AAP government in Punjab provided 48,000 government jobs in less than two years and facilitated over three lakh private-sector jobs for youths."
Reiterating his commitment to addressing unemployment, he added, "We know how to create employment and our intentions are honest. With people's support, we will eliminate unemployment from Delhi in the next five years."
Polling for the Delhi assembly elections is set to take place on 5 February, with results to be announced on 8 February. The AAP, aiming for a third consecutive term, faces stiff competition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Meanwhile, heavy traffic disruptions were reported in central Delhi on Thursday due to the full dress rehearsal for the Republic Day parade. Commuters faced significant inconvenience, especially in areas near India Gate and ITO.
One commuter described the situation on Ring Road near the ITO loop and IP Extension as chaotic.
"I was going to ITO when I found that Ring Road was packed with vehicles. The traffic on Vikas Marg was also very heavy. We had to take a U-turn near the IP Extension metro station," he said.
Traffic near Shivaji Stadium metro station, close to Connaught Place, was similarly congested, with vehicles moving at a crawling pace.
Sneha Rai, a resident of Noida, mentioned the added delays due to security checks at the Delhi-Noida border.
"Apart from the Delhi-Noida border, traffic was also heavy at Ashram Chowk and on Ring Road. The roads were closed near C-Hexagon at India Gate, leading to diversions for vehicles, which resulted in long queues," she stated.
The Delhi Police had issued a traffic advisory on Wednesday regarding movement restrictions and diversions around India Gate, advising commuters to plan their routes accordingly.
