The West Bengal Legislative Assembly is set to introduce a performance-based system to reward legislators, going beyond mere participation in debates and proceedings. As part of the initiative, one MLA will be honoured with the ‘Best MLA’ award every year over the next five years. The announcement was made by Speaker Rathindra Bose on the floor of the House on Thursday.
According to Assembly sources, a designated external agency has been entrusted with the responsibility of evaluating MLAs and preparing detailed reports on their performance.
The assessment will primarily focus on attendance during Assembly sessions, as well as contributions towards constituency development and issues of public interest. The agency will monitor the overall activities of legislators and submit its findings, which will form the basis for selecting the annual awardee.
The current Assembly includes 181 first-time MLAs. Addressing them, Speaker Bose reminded the new legislators of their responsibilities and urged them to learn from experienced members across both the ruling and opposition benches. He noted that seasoned MLAs could offer valuable insights into effectively using the Assembly platform for the development of their constituencies and the state.
Political observers have described the move as unprecedented in the state’s legislative framework. The introduction of a structured evaluation and recognition system is expected to encourage both new and veteran MLAs to take a more active and constructive role in the Assembly’s functioning, while promoting greater accountability and performance-driven governance.
