The tragic accident near Kanina village in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district claimed the lives of six students, with at least 15 sustaining injuries, as their school bus overturned on Thursday morning.

The bus, transporting students of GRL School, had 40 students ranging from Class 4 to Class 10 on board when the incident occurred. The injured students were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to police reports, initial investigations suggest that the bus driver was intoxicated, a claim supported by villagers' observations.

SP Verma confirmed that the driver, injured in the accident, has been apprehended, and an FIR will be filed. “We have also sought a response from the school authorities on why the institution was open on a public holiday,” he added.

Upon reaching the scene, Haryana Education Minister Seema Trikha directed the district administration to take stringent action against the school administration, including the principal.

"Private schools should stop doing business. Despite being a holiday, the school was working. It is a matter of grave concern. Stern action shall be taken. An inquiry shall also be conducted on how the private school was open despite being a government holiday,” Trikha said. She also visited Mahendragarh Civil Hospital, where the injured students were treated.

Deputy Commissioner Monika Gupta said it was “a matter of grave concern” that the private school was being run despite it being a government holiday on account of Eid. “The district education officer has recommended cancellation of the school’s recognition to the education department,” Gupta said.
