Political parties and civil societies have joined hands in widespread protests across Jammu and Kashmir against the targeted killings of two migrant workers in Srinagar’s Shaheed Gunj area on Wednesday.

“Amrit Pal and Rohit Masih, both residents of Punjab, were attacked by terrorists in the Shalla Kadal area of Srinagar on Wednesday evening. While Pal succumbed to his injuries immediately, Masih also succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning at SKIMS, Soura,” said officials.

People from various walks of life in Jammu and Kashmir, including mainstream political parties and civil societies, denounced the heinous act and organized a candlelight march across the UT.

In South Kashmir’s Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, and Anantnag districts, civil society members, trade bodies, and transporters participated in a silent candlelight march. People gathered near the important and historic places in these districts, demanding justice and urging the administration to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. One protester said, "Killing an innocent is like killing the entire humanity."

Meanwhile, in North Kashmir, residents of Kupwara, the district also joined the chorus of condemnation, holding a candle march from the Kupwara Bus stand to Fountain Chowk Rigipora. Protesters carried banners saying ‘We stand with the families of Amritpal and Rohit — No to innocent killings’.

Protesters from various sectors, including residents, civil society groups, traders, and transporters, united to denounce the attack and express support for the grieving families.

Apni Party chief, Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari, said, “It is an unfortunate and shameful incident for us that innocent people are still getting killed in Kashmir,” adding that authorities have failed to protect people in J&K.

"JKNC President Dr Farooq Abdullah and VP @OmarAbdullah are shocked and disgusted by the barbaric incident that took the life of Amrit Pal Singh in Shala Kadal, Srinagar. Their heartfelt condolences go out to his family," the party said in a social media post.

"Violence should have no place in our society, and such acts of barbarity only serve to hinder the progress & peace we strive for," adding that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemned the "dastardly attack" said the party in a social media post.

The tragic incident has cast a dark shadow over Kashmir, with protesters emphasizing the need for peace and harmony. They highlighted the value of every human life and expressed deep sadness and distress over such senseless violence.

The killings of Amrit Pal Singh and Rohit Masih have not only shocked the region but also reignited calls for concerted efforts to ensure the safety and security of all residents, regardless of their origin or occupation.

There has been widespread public condemnation of the killing of two non-local civilians, Amritpal Singh and Rohit, both of whom belonged to Punjab.

Rashtriya Bajrangdal also carried out protests in Jammu, denouncing the killings.

Local politicians, civil society members, religious leaders, and common people across the social spectrum have condemned these killings.

Meanwhile, the army has launched a search operation.
