Security arrangements at Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH) in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, came under serious scrutiny on Tuesday after a startling incident in the early hours left staff shocked and administration on alert.
Around 4 am, a wild jackal unexpectedly entered the emergency building and made its way directly into the Surgical ICU. According to eyewitnesses, the jackal walked in unhindered through the hospital’s main gate and crossed the emergency corridor without being noticed by security personnel. It then slipped under a bed inside the dark ICU and hid.
The presence of the animal came to light when an emergency staff member spotted it. Acting swiftly, he rushed into the ICU, turned on the lights and, with the help of other staff members, managed to chase the jackal out of the unit.
After a brief period of chaos, the jackal fled using the same route and exited through the main gate. The incident has raised serious concerns about the Medical College and hospital’s security system, particularly how a wild animal managed to enter one of the most sensitive and restricted medical areas without detection.
Hospital authorities are now under pressure to review and strengthen security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
