A dip in the temperature and worsening fog in the state has prompted the Punjab government to order schools to remain closed until January 13.
A tweet by Punjab’s education minister, Harjot Singh Bains, said as per the directions by state chief minister, Bhagwant Singh Mann, all government, aided, recognised and private schools of the state will now reopen on January 14.
“In accordance with the directives of the Honorable Chief Minister of Punjab, S. Bhagwant Singh Mann Ji, taking into account the continuously increasing cold and fog in the state, and keeping in mind the health and safety of children and staff, holidays are being declared in all government, aided, recognized, and private schools of the state until January 13,” the official tweet reads.
On Wednesday, the weather office said the minimum temperature recorded across various stations in Punjab was as low as 5 degrees Celsius. Bathinda was the coldest at 4.6 degrees Celsius, Amritsar recorded a minimum temperature of 7.5 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana was at 6.6 degrees Celsius, Patiala at 7.1 degrees Celsius, and Gurdaspur at 5.7 degrees Celsius.
Earlier, the schools were to reopen on January 7.
