A woman in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district has been arrested for allegedly killing her husband on Thursday, officials said. According to police officials, the body of Bittu Ram, a resident of Dhar Dugnoo village in Billawar, was found in a stream on October 9 last year.

The victim, Bittu Ram, had multiple injuries on his face and body, along with a strangulation mark around his neck.

Following the incident, a case was registered under the relevant sections of law. The police later conducted a scientific examination of the crime scene and seized several exhibits.

During the investigation, the police collected and examined evidence and questioned several suspects before identifying the victim’s wife, Simro Devi, as the prime suspect.

During the probe, the accused confessed to her involvement in the crime. She told investigating officers that she had an illicit relationship (extramarital), which led to frequent quarrels and strained relations between the couple, a police spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that the woman also admitted to strangling her husband with a rope due to these persistent disputes. Evidence connected to the offence was also collected by the police during the investigation.

Bittu Ram had been missing since the morning of October 19, 2024, after leaving his home to go for coaching. His mutilated body was found in a sack in a pond on the evening of October 21, 2024.

Police had suspected foul play due to the decomposed condition of the body and initiated a murder investigation.

As per the Indian Penal Code, intentional murder is punished under Section 302 of the IPC (or Section 103 of the BNS) with death or life imprisonment and a fine, often reserved for "rarest of rare" cases.
