A tragic incident unfolded in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district early Saturday morning, where a woman lost her life after the car she was travelling in suddenly caught fire near the Chana Toriya toll plaza on the Sagar-Damoh highway, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Seema, the wife of Nilesh Patel, a well-known physician from Garhakota town.
According to police officials, the incident occurred around 4 am when Seema was travelling with her husband and two others. As the vehicle approached the toll plaza, it reportedly caught fire and was quickly engulfed in flames.
Sanodha police station in-charge Bharat Singh Thakur said that while Patel and the two other occupants managed to escape the vehicle, Seema was unable to get out in time. She died at the scene.
Police said Seema had earlier complained of chest pain and was being taken to a hospital when the incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses described the fire as spreading rapidly, leaving little time for any rescue.
Panic gripped the area as locals gathered at the spot while the vehicle burned. Fire and rescue teams rushed to the scene, but the blaze had already claimed the woman’s life.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in the vehicle or a possible collision. However, officials said all angles are being examined.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has raised suspicions over the incident. Seema’s brother, Lokesh Patel, alleged that it could be a premeditated act, claiming there were no visible signs of an accident and that the other occupants escaped unharmed.
Police have called in a forensic team to examine the scene and determine the exact cause of the fire. Authorities said further details will emerge after a thorough investigation.
