A bizarre case has surfaced from Amhi village under the Ghoghardiha police station area of Madhubani district, where a woman died days after she was allegedly brutally assaulted and forced to drink alcohol mixed with urine at the house of the village head.
According to police, the incident occurred on February 25, but came to public attention on Saturday after Madhubani Police shared details of the case in a post on social media.
Family members and eyewitnesses alleged that the woman had gone to the residence of village head Kumari Devi seeking help to resolve a land dispute within her family. However, an argument reportedly broke out during the discussion.
The victim’s husband, Mohammad Sahasuddin, alleged that the situation soon turned violent. “She had gone there to seek help, but instead she was tied to a pole and beaten mercilessly,” he said.
Witnesses claimed several people joined the assault and beat the woman with bamboo sticks until she lost consciousness. One woman from the village alleged that when the victim asked for water during the assault, she was forced to drink alcohol mixed with urine.
After the alleged attack, police personnel reached the spot and took the injured woman for treatment. She was first taken to the Primary Health Centre in Ghoghardiha, and later referred to the Sub-Divisional Hospital in Phulparas due to her serious condition.
Sahasuddin said that as her condition worsened, she was shifted to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital and later referred to Patna for advanced treatment. However, she died during treatment on March 1.
Community leader Ajay Mansoori, the state president of the Mansoori community, demanded strict action against the accused. He said the dispute was originally meant to be resolved in a village panchayat meeting.
According to Mansoori, tensions escalated after the victim’s husband failed to attend the panchayat meeting. He alleged that the village head’s son, Magnu Singh, had earlier gone to the woman’s house and misbehaved with her. Later, when the woman went to the village head’s house, she was allegedly assaulted and forced to drink alcohol mixed with urine.
Madhubani Deputy Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar said police received information about the assault on February 25, following which the Dial 112 team reached the village and arranged medical treatment for the injured woman.
“Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family on February 28, a case was registered. Considering the sensitivity of the matter, Ghoghardiha police arrested the main accused, Magnu Singh, and sent him to judicial custody,” the DSP said.
The police have also named village head Kumari Devi and several of her family members in the case. “The post-mortem report is awaited, and the investigation is continuing,” said a police officer.
