A 24-year-old married woman reportedly died by suicide by hanging herself at Puj Mohalla in Kaithal on Monday. She had been married for around nine months. A two-page note reportedly left by her has led to allegations of dowry-related harassment. Her family has accused her husband and other in-laws of mentally and physically troubling her.
Following a complaint from the woman’s family, city police registered a case against five members of her husband’s family, including her husband. An investigation has been launched.
The woman, identified as Jyoti, married Naveen in November 2025, her maternal uncle Bajrang Raj said. He said the family had limited financial resources but still gave jewellery and other household items according to what they could afford at the time of the wedding.
The family alleged that Jyoti began facing pressure from her in-laws for more dowry soon after the marriage. They claimed the alleged harassment continued over the following months and eventually pushed her to take the extreme step.
The two-page note reportedly found after Jyoti’s death describes the emotional distress she was facing and her experience at her matrimonial home. She allegedly wrote about her parents’ financial difficulties and said they had spent more than they could afford on her wedding. She also accused her in-laws of being driven by greed and said she felt she had lost everything.
A line in the alleged note — “If there is really no justice for the poor in this world, stop sacrificing the daughters of the poor” — has left the family deeply distressed and has drawn attention to her allegations.
Police have not yet verified the claims made in the note. Officials said the allegations will form part of the investigation.
Jyoti’s family members were visibly distressed and called for strict action against those named in their complaint. They demanded that the accused be arrested and said they would continue their fight for justice.
Mahipal, the investigating officer at the city police station, said police reached the location after receiving information about the death. Based on the family’s complaint and the alleged suicide note, a case has been registered under relevant provisions related to dowry against five members of Jyoti’s in-laws’ family. One of those named is her husband, Naveen Bansal, a resident of the Rally Godam area.
Police took the body into custody and completed the required legal procedures. The investigation is continuing, and further steps will depend on the evidence and findings gathered during the probe.
