A woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her mother-in-law in Mukhliana village of Hoshiarpur district, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, Prabhjot Kaur, wife of Harpreet Singh alias Fateh, was taken into custody after a case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The complaint was filed by the victim's son, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Nirmal Kaur.
The police said Harpreet Singh worked as a motorcycle mechanic in Ahirana Khurd. He was admitted to a private hospital in Hoshiarpur on June 14 after suffering from kidney stone-related problems.
Investigators said there were frequent arguments between Prabhjot Kaur, her husband and her mother-in-law.
In his complaint, Harpreet said that after returning home from the hospital around 3 am on June 15, a neighbour informed him that Prabhjot had come to her house through the terrace with bloodstains on her clothes.
Police said Prabhjot allegedly told the neighbour that she had argued with Nirmal Kaur and, in a fit of anger, struck her on the head with a brick. When Harpreet reached home, he found his mother lying in a pool of blood inside a bedroom, the complaint stated.
The body was later sent for a post-mortem examination. Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
