A 42-year-old woman was killed in front of her daughter in the Kasba area of South Kolkata in the early hours of Sunday. The accused, identified as her husband, has been arrested, police said.
The deceased, Swapna Singh, was found critically injured at her residence on Bosepukur Road around 4:00 AM. She was rushed to the Kolkata National Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police have arrested the accused husband, Vinod Singh, following a complaint filed by a family member.
Preliminary investigation by the police suggests that a heated argument broke out between the couple late Saturday night over a financial dispute. Local residents alleged that Vinod had returned home around 10:00 pm and demanded money from his wife. When she refused, an altercation ensued, following which he reportedly left the house.
According to police sources, Vinod returned in the early hours of Sunday and gained entry into the house after his daughter opened the door. Swapna, who was asleep at the time, was allegedly attacked soon after. Their teenage daughter, who witnessed the incident, informed the neighbours.
Hearing screams, locals rushed to the house and arranged for Swapna to be taken to the hospital. By then, she had sustained critical injuries. Locals also managed to apprehend Vinod when he attempted to flee and handed him over to the police.
Officials stated that the couple had reportedly been facing marital discord for some time. Neighbours also alleged that the accused would often return home intoxicated and demand money, leading to frequent disputes.
Commenting on the case, Rupesh Kumar, the joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), said, “An investigation is underway. It would not be appropriate to make any statements at this juncture.”
