The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the death of school teacher Srishti Kandari, who allegedly died by suicide within eight months of her marriage in Dehradun. Commission Chairperson Kusum Kandwal expressed grief over the incident and assured that the matter would be closely monitored.

 

Kandwal said she immediately contacted senior police officials after learning about the case. She also spoke with Srishti's mother to understand the family's concerns and seek details about the incident.

 

"As soon as I received information about the case, I spoke to the SSP, the Circle Officer, the SHO concerned and Srishti's mother. The Women's Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter," she said.

 

Calling the incident deeply distressing, Kandwal said it was heartbreaking that a young and educated woman, who worked as a teacher, felt compelled to take such a step.

 

She appealed to women facing harassment or any form of distress to seek help from authorities rather than suffering in silence. Kandwal said the Women's Commission, police and other agencies are available to support them and ensure justice.

 

"The Commission's doors are always open. If something wrong is happening, reach out to us or the police. We will help you. Strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible," she said.

 

Meanwhile, Dehradun Police have registered a case against a private secretary posted in the Uttarakhand Secretariat and some of his family members in connection with the alleged dowry death of his wife.

 

According to police, the woman was found hanging at her residence. Following the incident, her mother lodged a complaint accusing the husband and his relatives of subjecting her daughter to continuous harassment.

 

Circle Officer Vandana Verma said the police received information about the death at Doiwala Kotwali and immediately sent a team to the spot.

 

"The police inspected the scene, completed the inquest proceedings and conducted a post-mortem examination," Verma said.

 

The case later turned into a criminal investigation after the victim's family alleged that she had been mentally harassed and subjected to cruelty by her husband and in-laws.
