In a bid to modernise agricultural production techniques in the state, Tripura’s Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Friday the state's initiative to integrate drone technology into its agricultural sector.
Women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will be trained to operate these drones for various farming tasks.
Minister Nath, addressing the media after inaugurating the Agriculture Development Research and Training Centre at Killa in Gomati district, said that the integration of drone technology aims to tackle specific agricultural challenges.
"Within the next few months, we will see the deployment of drones in our agriculture sector. This initiative, known as the 'Drone Didi' scheme, is particularly designed for women," he stated.
Women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will be trained to operate these drones for various farming tasks.
Following this launch, Tripura established a state committee to oversee the implementation. Based on the committee’s recommendations, drones will be distributed to agricultural sub-divisions.
"The trainers have already been recruited. We expect drones to be available in each of the 47 agri-subdivisions within two months," Nath informed.
The drones will be used for tasks such as spraying fertilizers and pesticides in fruit and flower gardens.
Additionally, Nath announced a special scheme to appoint "Krishi Sakhis" (Friends of Farmers), who will provide agricultural solutions to farmers in rural areas.
"One Sakhi will be appointed for each rural local body, including Gram Panchayats and Village Committees. We have forwarded the proposal to the central government and are awaiting approval. Once approved, the appointment process will commence immediately," he added.
