Police using water cannons to disperse protestors.

Youth Congress workers staged a large protest outside the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on Friday, in response to the ED’s chargesheet filed against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others in the National Herald case. The demonstration was part of a broader nationwide protest campaign by the Youth Congress.

Protesters attempted to assemble in front of the ED office despite police warnings to vacate the area. As the crowd grew and refused to disperse, law enforcement resorted to using water cannons to control and eventually disperse the demonstrators.

Youth Congress state president Mitendra Singh, speaking to mediapersons, strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the government was fostering an atmosphere of fear in the country.

He said the protest was a stand against attempts to stifle democratic dissent. Singh claimed that when voices like Rahul Gandhi's speak out for the people and for the Constitution, the government responds with false accusations and investigations through central agencies like the ED and CBI.

He emphasised that Youth Congress workers were ready to take this message to the public and continue fighting for democratic values.

The Enforcement Directorate recently filed a prosecution complaint against the Gandhis and other Congress leaders in the National Herald case, with the matter scheduled for arguments on cognisance at the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court on April 25.

Meanwhile, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahavir Singh Mujalde confirmed that the Youth Congress protest was part of a larger, ongoing national agitation against the ED chargesheet.

He stated that after multiple warnings to disperse were ignored, the police were compelled to use water cannons. Mujalde noted that despite the use of force, the protest remained peaceful and there were no reports of violence or damage.
