YouTuber Savukku Shankar walked out of Puzhal Central Prison this Saturday after the Madras High Court granted him a three-month interim bail on medical grounds. Shankar, the CEO of Savukku Media, had been in custody since his arrest on December 13 following allegations of assault and extortion involving a film producer. His release was met with a defiant social media post; shortly after heading home, he shared a photo on 'X' with the caption, "Did you think I would be defeated?"
The decision to release him came from a vacation bench of Justices SM Subramaniam and P Dhanabal, who were hearing an appeal filed by Shankar’s mother, A Kamala. She had petitioned the court for his release so he could receive specialized treatment for chronic cardiac issues and diabetes. The court granted bail until March 25, 2026, upon a personal bond of ₹1 lakh. The judges also used the opportunity to voice concerns regarding how the state handled Shankar’s repeated incarcerations.
The judges remarked that this looks like an "abuse of the process of law" and warned that using law enforcement to settle scores with critics brings "serious disrepute" to the agency. The court concluded that personal liberty should not be curtailed simply because someone has fallen out of favor with the ruling dispensation.
