Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president YS Sharmila on Friday fired a broadside at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the nation of being under an "undeclared Emergency" for 11 years. Democratic institutions had been weakened, national wealth transferred to corporates and communalism instigated, Sharmila asserted, comparing the 2002 Godhra train burning to the Emergency declared in 1975 by the then PM Indra Gandhi.

"In contrast to 1975 Emergency, this is worse. Now, people are afraid of speaking up. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax (IT), and Election Commission (EC) are all in the stranglehold of the Bharatiya Janata Party," Sharmila told at a press conference.

Sharmila blamed the BJP and its allies — Telugu Desam Party, Janasena Party, and opposition YSRCP— of keeping mum about the alleged diminution and dilution of the Polavaram project.

She stated that the Polavaram Project, initially planned to improve lives, has been 'reduced to a mere barrage' and allegedly deprived ₹80,000 crore of Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) benefits for the affected families of this project. She added that in Parliament, none of the MPs dared to raise their voice, complaining that PM Modi's double-engine government loads the state with loans but not grants.

"He speaks of yoga but doesn't notice problems of the public. He has not come to Manipur yet. Is this not an Emergency?" she asked at her press conference in Eluru.

She claimed that only Congress can sort out bifurcation conflicts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, construct a capital city, and provide a Special Category Status (SCS) by coming back to power. Citing the Congress as a 'mighty ocean', she added all tributaries have to merge into it eventually, including YSRCP.
