A youth was arrested by the Zirakpur police on Monday for impersonating an Indian Air Force (IAF) officer. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Sukhpreet Singh, was spotted wearing an IAF uniform and roaming suspiciously near the boundary wall of the Air Force base on Pabhat Road.
Local residents noticed him roaming suspiciously and immediately alerted the authorities. Singh was accompanied by his accomplice, Suraj, who was also detained.
The police investigation revealed that the uniform had been stolen from a courier agency on April 5.
Zirakpur DSP Jaspinder Singh said, “A tailor of Behlana, Chandigarh, had sent the uniform in a packet to the courier agency for delivery to a Gujarat-based Air Force officer, but the suspects stole it before delivery. A case has been registered under Sections Section 204 (impersonating a public servant) and Section 305 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Zirakpur police station and both accused have been arrested.”
Earlier, Sukhpreet, who resides in Ashiana Complex in Zirakpur, claimed that he had found the uniform near a local bakery on April 6, but further inquiries debunked his statement.
The authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. SHO Gagandeep Singh stated that Sukhpreet had a history of petty crimes and was also facing charges in two theft cases.
The Air Force has launched its own probe into the matter. Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
