The District and Sessions Judge’s court on Friday rejected the bail applications of Amritaprava Mahanta and two of Zubeen Garg’s bodyguards, Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora, in a major development in the ongoing Zubeen Garg murder case.
The decision followed detailed hearings held earlier on January 22, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Garima Saikia Garg opposing the pleas. The prosecution highlighted serious allegations, including criminal conspiracy and financial misappropriation.
Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar argued that Baishya and Bora, entrusted with funds meant for the singer’s safety, had misused and siphoned off the money for personal gain. “They were supposed to protect Zubeen Garg, not exploit him. Their conduct clearly points towards culpability,” he said.
Kamar further submitted that Amritaprava Mahanta was not a peripheral figure but an active conspirator, fully involved in the criminal scheme. The court found no grounds to grant her bail, given the evidence against her.

The defence had filed three fresh petitions seeking details of an investigation in Singapore. Kamar clarified that the Assam SIT probe is independent and has no linkage with any overseas investigation. The court has scheduled February 13 for hearing the new defence petitions, while arguments on objections from a business partner linked to Mahavir Aqua will be heard on February 16.
The SIT has also sought attachment of properties allegedly linked to the accused, including assets at Mahavir Aqua Water Factory and an apartment at Orchid View Apartments, Fatasil Ambari. Kamar noted that if misuse of funds is established, the state will seek legal confiscation.
Reacting to the court order, Garima Saikia Garg expressed relief. “We are satisfied that the bail pleas have been rejected. There should be no bail for any of the accused, now or ever. Justice for Zubeen Garg will prevail with the support of the people of Assam,” she said.
Two other accused, Shyamkanu Mahanta and Sandipan Garg, had earlier withdrawn their bail applications. The hearing on Friday was attended by Garima Saikia Garg and members of the SIT, reflecting the case’s high profile and sensitivity.
