Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of singer Zubeen Garg is likely to submit its chargesheet before 8 December, adding that he stands by his claim that the artiste was “murdered”. The statement has intensified scrutiny of the high-profile case, which has gripped Assam since Garg’s death in Singapore on 19 September.

The celebrated singer had travelled to Singapore to attend the Northeast India Festival, where an alleged drowning incident led to his death. Initial reports pointed to an accident, but Sarma’s insistence on foul play has shifted the political and investigative tone around the case. “Today, I am not saying Zubeen Garg's death is an accident, it is a murder. We will have to submit the chargesheet of Zubeen Garg murder case before December 17. I have given the target to submit the chargesheet by December 8. We are ready,” he said.

Sarma added that he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to expedite the mandatory approval required from the Ministry of Home Affairs, as the incident occurred outside India. “If any incident happens in a foreign country, it is needed an approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs before submitting the chargesheet… I think that, in next 3-4 days the SIT will write to the MHA, we will get approval and we will submit the chargesheet on December 7 or 8 or 9,” he told reporters.

Political tensions escalated further as the Chief Minister reiterated an allegation directed at Congress MP and APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, calling him “100 percent a Pakistani agent”. He said the matter would be taken up after the chargesheet in the Zubeen case is filed.

The Chief Minister also announced that a new bill to ban polygamy will be introduced in the Assam Assembly on 25 November. “We will bring a bill to ban polygamy on November 25. If anyone is found polygamy, he will face 7 years of rigorous imprisonment,” he said.

Garg’s death has triggered widespread grief across Assam, with fans and cultural organisations demanding full clarity on the circumstances leading to the loss of one of the state’s most influential artistes. The SIT’s findings, once authorised by the MHA, are expected to outline the sequence of events and the basis for the Chief Minister’s repeated assertion of murder.
