WhatsApp users now have the ability to message ChatGPT directly for assistance or creative support with various projects, thanks to an update that assigns the chatbot its own contact number on the platform.

According to a report by the news agency PA Media, OpenAI has announced that anyone around the world can reach out to ChatGPT using the newly provided phone number, 1-800-242-8478.

Recently, Meta has launched several new features for WhatsApp to improve the messaging experience and make interactions more engaging and dynamic. One of the highly anticipated updates is the new Typing Indicator, which provides a clearer view of who is typing in both individual and group conversations.

WhatsApp has also revealed plans to cease support for older versions of iOS following May 2025. Users operating devices with iOS versions prior to 15.1 will need to upgrade to continue using the app.

How does the AI chatbot function?

The AI firm mentioned that many individuals encounter difficulties and high expenses when trying to access reliable high-speed data. The new WhatsApp account aims to assist more users in trying out ChatGPT through a familiar app.

With approximately two billion monthly active users, Meta's messaging application is significant. OpenAI has noted that those messaging the chatbot can ask any queries, with ChatGPT providing help in creative writing, project organization, offering suggestions, or engaging in discussions about topics like news, hobbies, and trivia.

OpenAI is working on widening ChatGPT’s user base to increase revenue and meet investor expectations while managing rising costs associated with the computing power needed to run its AI models.

This announcement is a part of OpenAI's "12 Days of Christmas" series, which in December already revealed the text-to-video platform Sora and a new premium subscription priced at 200 USD (£157) per month, granting access to the company’s most advanced AI models.

OpenAI mentioned that while the WhatsApp version of ChatGPT could be beneficial, it remains an experimental feature, suggesting that its availability and limitations may evolve over time.

Furthermore, the company encouraged users looking for a more comprehensive experience with enhanced limits and personalisation to keep using ChatGPT through their primary accounts.
