Christmas eve asteroid: NASA monitors 120-foot space rock

Researchers are vigilantly observing asteroid 2024 XN1, which is set to pass near Earth on December 24. This asteroid is roughly 120 feet in size and will come within 4,480,000 miles, which is 16 times farther than the Moon is from Earth.

Researchers are vigilantly observing asteroid 2024 XN1, which is set to pass near Earth on December 24. This asteroid is roughly 120 feet in size and will come within 4,480,000 miles, which is 16 times farther than the Moon is from Earth.

Travelling at an impressive speed of 14,743 miles per hour, this incident is classified as a "near miss," according to scientists, who emphasise that there is no threat to Earth from this flyby.

However, studying asteroids like 2024 XN1 is crucial for understanding the formation of the early solar system. NASA is actively tracking the asteroid using advanced monitoring technology to determine its trajectory.

There is no risk of this asteroid posing a danger, but its approach serves as a reminder of the necessity to continue planetary defence initiatives.

Asteroid 2024 XN1 is the largest among the next five asteroids that will come close to Earth. This significant rock, with a diameter of approximately 120 feet, is under close surveillance by NASA's Asteroid Watch dashboard, which monitors asteroids and comets that make relatively proximate passes to our planet.

The Asteroid Watch dashboard offers information about each object's nearest approach, detailing the date, size, and distance from Earth. By hovering over each asteroid's encounter date, users can access additional information about its size and closeness to Earth.

Although 2024 XN1 is the most sizeable of the forthcoming asteroids, scientists assure us that none of these bodies pose any threat to our planet. The dashboard serves to keep the public updated and underscores the importance of tracking space objects for potential future hazards.
