In a move that furthers the democratization of artificial intelligence (AI), Elon Musk, CEO of X and founder of xAI, has followed through on his promise to make the GrokAI chatbot open-source.

The decision marks a significant development in AI accessibility, allowing developers and researchers to leverage and enhance the capabilities of GrokAI for diverse applications. However, Musk didn't miss the opportunity to take another swipe at OpenAI, questioning the "Open" aspect of the organization's name.

Musk's announcement comes just a week after he pledged to release GrokAI's source code to the public. Today, xAI officially unveiled the open-sourced version of GrokAI on GitHub, fulfilling Musk's commitment and opening the doors for collaborative innovation in the AI community.

GrokAI's transition to an open-source platform signifies a departure from the traditional proprietary model, where AI advancements are often guarded and restricted. By releasing the base model weights and network architecture of Grok-1, a large language model boasting 314 billion parameters, xAI aims to foster transparency and accelerate progress in AI research and development.

In a blog post accompanying the release, the xAI team emphasized the model's raw capabilities, highlighting its extensive training on diverse datasets without specific task tailoring. Interested parties are encouraged to explore the model's intricacies and contribute to its evolution by adhering to the instructions provided on GitHub.

Despite the positive strides towards AI openness, Musk couldn't resist taking a dig at OpenAI. In a tweet, he quipped, "Tell us more about the 'Open' part of OpenAI," reigniting his longstanding critique of the organization's direction.

Musk's skepticism towards OpenAI isn't new. He has previously accused the company of deviating from its initial altruistic goals and prioritizing commercial interests over societal welfare. This sentiment culminated in a lawsuit filed by Musk against OpenAI, alleging contractual breaches and unethical business practices aimed at maximizing profits for Microsoft, OpenAI's primary investor.

In response to Musk's legal action, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman resurfaced past interactions between himself and Musk, showcasing the latter's earlier support for the organization. However, tensions between Musk and OpenAI persist, with conflicting narratives emerging regarding their historical collaboration and disagreements over the company's strategic direction.

Musk's involvement with OpenAI dates back to its inception in 2015, but he severed ties and divested his stake in 2018.

The recent exchange highlighted ongoing friction between the tech mogul and his former venture, reflecting broader debates surrounding AI ethics, governance, and corporate responsibility.
