GE Aerospace has delivered the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk 1A, marking a key milestone in India's defence manufacturing and aviation sector.
The American aerospace company confirmed the delivery on Tuesday.
“On Tuesday (March 25), we were excited to deliver the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to our valued customer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mk 1A fighter jet,” GE Aerospace stated.
The F404-IN20 engine, tailored for India's single-engine fighter, is the highest-thrust variant within the F404 family.
According to GE Aerospace’s official blog, the engine incorporates a higher-flow fan, unique single-crystal turbine blades, and several special components, making it a vital asset for the Indian Air
One of the most successful military aviation engines globally, the F404 has powered thousands of combat aircraft.
GE Aerospace highlighted its long-standing association with HAL, recalling that by 2016, it had fulfilled an earlier commitment by delivering 65 F404-IN20 engines for the Tejas LCA.
With no additional orders at the time, the production line for the F404-IN20 was deactivated.

However, following HAL’s procurement of 99 additional engines in 2021 for the Tejas Mk 1A LCA, GE Aerospace undertook the complex task of reviving the production line, which had remained dormant for five years, and reactivating its global supply chain.
GE Aerospace and HAL have worked in close collaboration for several years, ensuring that the F404-IN20 engine is tailored to the requirements of the Indian Air Force.
The company noted that the engine had proven its capabilities, allowing the Tejas LCA to achieve Mach 1.1 speeds and climb to mission altitudes during its first test flight in 2008.
“This week’s first engine delivery is a testament to what we have accomplished with HAL over the past 40 years, and a symbol of our combined potential to ensure a strong future for India’s military,” GE Aerospace stated.
The company further highlighted its longstanding association with Indian defence manufacturing. “It is an important milestone in our 40-year relationship with HAL and in our efforts to ensure a strong future for India’s military by developing next-generation fighters while enhancing the country's defence manufacturing capabilities,” GE Aerospace said.
The collaboration between GE Aerospace and India dates back to the 1980s, when the company worked alongside the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).
The F404-IN20 was formally selected for the Tejas programme in 2004, marking a significant breakthrough for both India and GE Aerospace.
