Google’s daily listen offers 5-min news rundown

Google is testing a new AI feature called "Daily Listen," designed to provide users with a five-minute audio summary of news stories and topics tailored to their interests. Available to both Android and iOS users in the US, the feature uses AI-generated audio overviews based on a user's Discover feed and search history.

Google is testing a new AI feature called "Daily Listen," offering users a five-minute audio overview of stories and topics tailored to their interests.

The AI-generated audio is based on a user’s Discover feed and search history, with the feature also providing a transcript and cover art. Available to Android and iOS users in the US, Daily Listen can be enabled via the Search Labs section, accessed by clicking the triangular beaker in the Google app.

Once activated, users will see a Daily Listen card labelled ‘Made for you’ under the Space carousel, just below the Google Search bar. Tapping the card launches a full-screen player and prompts users to provide feedback with a thumbs up or thumbs down.

The feature offers users the ability to play, pause, rewind, and mute the audio for greater control.

In September, Google introduced NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews, an AI tool that converts documents into 10-minute podcasts with AI hosts. These hosts summarise material, draw connections, and engage in banter. Recently, Google upgraded the feature, allowing users to "call in" to the podcast and ask AI hosts for clarifications or additional details.

Google described the experience as akin to having a personal tutor or guide who listens and responds directly, drawing from the information in users' sources. NotebookLM is powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro, alongside an experimental version of Gemini 2.0 Flash.
