Google takes stand against deepfake pornography with new advertising policy

In a bid to tackle the proliferation of deepfake pornography, Google has announced a significant update to its advertising policies.

Effective May 30, 2024, Google's revised guidelines explicitly prohibit the promotion of websites and applications that facilitate the creation or distribution of deepfake pornographic content.

Deepfake technology, which utilizes artificial intelligence to create realistic-looking fake videos, has increasingly been utilized to generate explicit content, often without the consent of the individuals involved.

This emerging trend has raised serious ethical and privacy concerns, prompting Google to take proactive measures to address the issue.

Under the updated Inappropriate Content Policy, advertisers will face immediate suspension if they are found to be promoting platforms that specialize in deepfake pornography.

This includes websites or apps that produce such content, offer instructions on how to create it, or endorse and compare different deepfake porn services.
