Matthew Candy, IBM’s global managing partner for generative AI, declared that a computer science degree may no longer be a prerequisite for entering the tech industry.

He foresees a future where AI takes on the role of coding, enabling individuals to bring ideas to life without any traditional technical qualifications.

In a recent interview with Fortune, Matthew highlighted the transformative impact of AI on the speed of idea execution. “The speed at which people will be able to come up with an idea, to test the idea, make something, that is what is going to be accelerated”, he stated.

This acceleration, he emphasised, means that aspiring tech professionals won’t need a computer science degree to contribute to the industry. He further stressed upon the soft skills like creativity and innovation that will be significant.  “Questioning, creativity skills and innovation are crucial because AI’s going to declutter, creating room for capacity in creative thought processes”, thus signalling a departure from traditional emphasis on technical expertise.

Candy expanded the scope of AI’s impact beyond the tech sector, envisioning its role in arts. He suggested, AI image generation technology could empower individuals to undertake roles traditionally reserved for graphic designers, stressing on the fact, “You’re going to be able to take on the role of a designer, you don’t need graphic designers or have an art degree to pursue such things”

Matthew Candy’s insights and predictions affirms a future where individuals no longer will have to face conventional educational barriers. Where AI will facilitate inclusivity, empowering individuals to contribute effectively to technology and creative fields.
