Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced that India has produced over 40 quantum technology startups in the past two years, several of which show potential for global impact.
The announcement was made during a review meeting of the Department of Science and Technology held in New Delhi on Saturday.
Minister Singh directed officials to prioritize the National Quantum Mission, emphasizing the development of quantum technologies and quantum communication. "India is currently on an equal pedestal with other nations in terms of quantum technologies, our mission should be to establish India as a global leader in quantum technologies", Singh said.
Quantum technology, which leverages the principles of quantum mechanics for complex calculations, is crucial in various fields including cryptography, chemistry, healthcare, medicine, and logistics.
Singh highlighted the significant role of startups and the private sector in advancing India's science and technology sectors.
A notable success story shared by the minister was 'QuNu Labs,' a Bangalore-based startup incubated by IIT Madras. QuNu Labs recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Technology Development Board (TDB) to develop security products based on quantum technologies.
In addition to the strides in quantum technology, Singh highlighted the doubling of women's participation in extramural research and development (R&D) over the last decade.
This increase is attributed to special efforts by the government to promote women scientists and researchers through fellowship STEM programs.
