During a recent gathering titled 'Digital Bharat, Viksit Bharat' on Monday, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasised India's forthcoming prominence in emerging technologies over the next decade, including artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing.
“This is a whole vision that our prime minister has in terms of taking this whole tech innovation and digital economy forward. I think the next 10 years are going to be even more exciting than the last decade,” he told a gathering of startup/unicorn founders and innovators during the ‘Digital Bharat, Viksit Bharat’ event.
Chandrasekhar highlighted the government's focus areas for the upcoming years, outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which include electronics and microelectronics manufacturing, AI, telecom, high-performance computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity, automotive, and electric vehicles (EVs).
Prime Minister Modi's administration has allocated Rs 1 lakh crore (approximately $12 billion) to a research and innovation fund aimed at advancing science and R&D.
Additionally, a Rs 20,000 crore India AI mission has been announced to support the next wave of startups, focusing on establishing AI compute infrastructure, he said.
Recently, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for semiconductor plants worth over Rs 1.25 lakh crore.
Chandrasekhar reflected on India's digital economy evolution, stating that in 2014, it constituted about 4 percent of the GDP and primarily served as the world's back office. However, fueled by innovation, the digital economy in India is now growing at 2.8 times the previous rate.
Chandrasekhar expressed India's ambition to become a trillion-dollar digital economy by 2030, highlighting its current status as the fastest-growing digital economy globally.
