PLI Success: Apple’s Indian ecosystem emerges as top job creator

Since the launch of India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones in August 2021, the Apple ecosystem has solidified its position as a primary driver of blue-collar employment in the country. Directly employing over 150,000 individuals, it stands as the largest creator of such jobs, significantly contributing to India’s employment landscape.

Under the PLI scheme, companies availing incentives are mandated to disclose their job creation data.

Apple’s direct employment in India currently encompasses nearly 3,000 individuals, while the development of iOS applications supports an impressive one million jobs, according to officials.

Quoting a financial daily, an official highlighted that over the last 32 months, the Apple ecosystem may have generated more than 400,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly.

Apple’s strategic emphasis on India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, has intensified amidst global tensions and market challenges, particularly in the United States and China.

Commencing iPhone manufacturing operations in India in 2017, the company has steadily increased its local production capacity, aligning with the objectives of the PLI scheme.
