WhatsApp will stop functioning on older Android devices starting in 2025. Beginning on January 1, WhatsApp will no longer operate on Android phones that run Android KitKat or earlier versions. This change means that users with older Android models will need to upgrade their devices to continue using the messaging application.
The decision to stop supporting older Android devices stems from the insufficient hardware capability of these older models to handle the new features being introduced in the app.
This rationale makes sense, especially since WhatsApp integrated Meta AI earlier this year and has since expanded its AI initiatives with several related features.
As a result of this new policy, WhatsApp will become unusable on many classic Android phones, including the Samsung Galaxy S3, Motorola Moto G, HTC One X, and Sony Xperia Z.

Additionally, WhatsApp has also revealed that it will discontinue support for iPhones operating on iOS 15.1 or older versions. This could signify the end for devices like iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. However, iPhone users have until May 5, 2025, to switch to a new device.
