In a proactive environmental initiative, the West Bengal government has started planting saplings of tall trees along the inter-state border in the Jangal Mahal region to create a 'green barrier' aimed at preventing air-borne particulate matter from entering the state.
&nbsp;
The development was shared by the ruling Trinamool Congress in the assembly on Friday. 
Responding to a query from BJP MLA Biswanath Karak, Environment Minister Md Ghulam Rabbani revealed that 6,000 saplings have already been planted across Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura districts. 
Highlighting the state&rsquo;s commitment to reducing fossil fuel use, Rabbani announced the distribution of 1,500 e-cycles to police stations.
&nbsp;
"This will encourage the use of e-two wheelers for patrolling whenever possible and send a positive message about climate conservation," he stated. 
In a lighter vein, Rabbani urged Speaker Biman Banerjee to consider installing a noise monitoring device in the assembly to monitor decibel levels in central Kolkata.
&nbsp;
He quipped that such a device could also measure the din during debates and sloganeering in the assembly, eliciting laughter in the House.

India’s Paris Olympics day 1: Full schedule and key events

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday arrested Kamlesh Kumar, a former journalist, who turned land dealer in the infamous land scam case in Ranchi. The arrest came after he was interrogated for over six hours at the ED&rsquo;s Zonal office in Ranchi.
&nbsp;
Sources said that Kamlesh was taken into custody at 8 p.m. for providing unsatisfactory responses regarding an alleged scam involving the transaction of a large piece of land in the Kanke area of Ranchi. Kamlesh had previously ignored at least five ED summonses before finally appearing for questioning on Friday.
&nbsp;
On June 21, the ED conducted raids at various locations associated with Kamlesh, seizing more than Rs 1 crore in cash and 100 live cartridges. Additionally, the agency found several incriminating documents at his residence in Astor Green and other locations in Ranchi.
&nbsp;
Following the raid, the ED sent a letter to the Director General of Police, calling for action on the case, and a case was filed against Kamlesh under the Arms Act at the Kanke police station in Ranchi.
&nbsp;
Kamlesh is accused of using fake documents to acquire land worth several crores and amassing significant property over the past decade. Sources suggest that he operated under the protection of high-ranking officials in both the administration and police.
&nbsp;
Another land dealer Shekhar Kushwaha, who was arrested by the ED on June 12 and is connected to a syndicate involved in land grabbing using forged documents, provided information implicating Kamlesh in the acquisition of land at various locations in the Birsa Agricultural University Kanke area.
&nbsp;
ED has till date arrested over a dozen people in different land scam cases in Ranchi including IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan and politicians.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to chair the ninth governing council meeting of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) today, Saturday, July 27.
&nbsp;
The apex body of NITI Aayog, chaired by PM Modi, includes all state chief ministers, lieutenant governors of union territories, and several union ministers.
&nbsp;
Attendance from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled states is expected to be high.
&nbsp;
Notable attendees include Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Arunachal Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

"Before the budget, I said I would attend the meeting. A copy of my written speech was also sent to NITI Aayog as per their requirement. When the budget was placed, I found how states ruled by opposition parties had been neglected. They had been shown a stepmotherly attitude. I want to speak about this. If they allow me to speak, it&rsquo;s fine. If they don&rsquo;t, I will protest and leave," Banerjee stated to the media before departing for Delhi.

However, several chief ministers from opposition parties have opted to boycott the event.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy have all confirmed their absence.

The agenda of the NITI Aayog meeting focuses on fostering participative governance and collaboration between the Centre and state governments, aiming to enhance the quality of life for both rural and urban populations through strengthened delivery mechanisms of government interventions.

The ninth governing council meeting will deliberate on the &lsquo;Approach Paper&rsquo; for the vision document on Viksit Bharat @2047, with detailed discussions on the role of states in achieving this ambitious goal.

Another critical area of focus will be the recommendations from the third National Conference of Chief Secretaries, held in December last year.

Veteran table tennis star Achanta Sharath Kamal and ace badminton player PV Sindhu proudly led the Indian contingent as flagbearers during the historic opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics on the Seine River on Saturday.

This event, labelled the Parade of Nations, saw athletes parading along the iconic Seine River instead of the traditional stadium setting.
&nbsp;
The Indian men sported elegant kurta bundi sets, while the women dazzled in matching saris, both ensembles reflecting the tricolour of India's flag.
&nbsp;
The outfits featured traditional ikat-inspired prints and Banarasi brocade, designed by renowned fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani.
&nbsp;
For PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, this marked her third appearance at the Games. "I am super proud to be here at Olympic Village. This will be my third Olympics, and I am really excited for the competition to begin. At the same time, I will be the flagbearer for the Indian contingent, and I am super proud... I will be holding the bigger flag at the opening ceremony and I hope, with the same excitement, I do well in the competition and get a medal back to India," Sindhu shared ahead of the ceremony.

Sharath Kamal, a two-time Commonwealth Games singles gold medallist, is set to participate in his fifth and final Olympics. He expressed his excitement, stating, "It's been a moment that I've been dreaming and visualising about for the last 3-4 months. I'm pretty excited that I'm going to live that moment and especially that I'm going to do that with PV Sindhu. So, it's a fantastic moment, I would say."

The opening ceremony was a first in Olympic history, held outside a stadium, with athletes travelling on approximately 100 boats along the Seine.

This floating parade passed through some of Paris's most iconic locations, including Notre Dame, Pont des Arts, and Pont Neuf.

The parade began from the Austerlitz bridge beside the Jardin des Plantes and concluded at the Trocad&eacute;ro, where the remaining elements of Olympic protocol and final shows took place.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, India sent its largest-ever contingent of 124 athletes, who delivered the country's best performance with seven medals, including a historic gold by Neeraj Chopra in men's javelin throw.

For the Paris 2024 Olympics, India has sent 117 athletes&mdash;70 men and 47 women&mdash;competing in 69 medal events across 16 sports, including archery,&nbsp;athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and tennis.

Tennis legend Rohan Bopanna, 44, is the oldest athlete in the contingent, while 14-year-old swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu is the youngest.

PV Sindhu, Sharath Kamal lead India’s Paris Olympic parade

A team from the Central Bureau of Investigation, engaged in investigating the NEET paper leak case, recovered a sack full of mobile phones from a pond in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand in collaboration with local police.
&nbsp;
Sources said that the CBI recovered seven mobile phones from the sack thrown in the pond in the Sudamdih area, approximately 20 km away from Dhanbad town. The recovery came after questioning a youth named Pawan Kumar, who was earlier detained from the Combined Building area under the Dhanbad Sadar police station.
&nbsp;
Upon interrogation, Pawan Kumar led the CBI team to the pond, where local swimmers retrieved a sac containing the mobile phones and some documents.
Officials from the CBI, who were part of the operation, did not disclose further details about the mobile phones or the circumstances surrounding Pawan Kumar's detention.
&nbsp;
The CBI has so far taken into custody more than five individuals from various locations in Dhanbad as part of the investigation.
&nbsp;
Sources said that Pawan's mother reached the CBI office in Saraidhela in search of her son, where the officials told Pawan's mother that the Dhanbad CBI team has not arrested him. He has been taken into custody by the CBI of another state and taken to Patna.
&nbsp;
CBI sources claim that so far 37 people have been arrested in the NEET exam leak case. The CBI is searching for one Amit Singh of Karmik Nagar in Saraidhela, Dhanbad, but he has been absconding for a month.

The spectacle started with a dreamy break from tradition as 'Parade of Nations' kicked off the proceedings in which athletes from 205 countries and one refugee team sailed down the Seine on boats despite rain threatening to play spoilsport.

French President Emmanuel Macron and International Olympic Committee head Thomas Bach were in attendance as French football legend Zinedine Zidane was shown sprinting down the streets of Paris with the Olympic flame in a pre-recorded video before action went live.

The six kilometre parade began from Austerlitz bridge and 85 boats carried more than 6800 athletes amid loud cheers from the gathered crowd. A good number of athletes also skipped the incredible show due to their competitions on Saturday.

The sequence of arrivals followed the French alphabetical order. The first to arrive was the Greek contingent, for being the spiritual home of the Games, followed by the Refugee team.

The Indian contingent is being led by two flag-bearers - two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and table tennis legend A Sharath Kamal.

The boats passed through the iconic landmarks of the city such as the restored Cathedral of Notre Dame, which was gutted in a fire five years ago, the iconic Louvre Museum and also a few of Games venues.

American Pop superstar Lady Gaga was among the first international artists to enthral the assembled crowd. The ceremony is being helmed by artistic director Thomas Jolly.

Amid the colourful proceedings, a mysterious torch-bearer also became a focus of attention as he darted around the city and its most famous landmarks, holding the flame.

The bridges dotting the parade route featured dance performances for the fans, who had gathered at different spots after more than two lakh free tickets were distributed aside from the over one lakh that were sold.

The French organisers had promised an unforgettable spectacle, overcoming unprecedented logistical and security challenges to make an entire city the venue of the ceremony.
&nbsp;
India is being represented by 117 athletes, including 47 women, in the sporting spectacle.

The organisers have claimed that the ceremony will be the biggest in Games history with more than 300,000 people watching on the banks of the Seine and billions tuned in on television.

A special court here on Friday issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's brother, Anmol Bishnoi, in the case related to the firing outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan's Bandra residence.
&nbsp;
A warrant was also issued against Rohit Godera, an alleged member of the Bishnoi gang.
&nbsp;
Godera and Anmol, along with Lawrence Bishnoi, have been shown as absconding accused in the charge-sheet filed by Mumbai police earlier this month in connection with the April 14 firing incident.
&nbsp;
Lawrence Bishnoi is currently lodged in the Sabarmati central prison in Ahmedabad. Anmol and Godera are believed to be in Canada, as per the police.
&nbsp;
Allowing the prosecution's application, special judge for Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) cases BD Shelke issued a standing non-bailable warrant against Anmol and Godera.
&nbsp;
Six people have been arrested in the case.
&nbsp;
Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal allegedly fired shots outside Galaxy Apartments, Salman's residence, in the early hours of April 14.
&nbsp;
The two along with Sonukumar Bishnoi, Mohd Rafiq Choudhary and Harpal Singh are currently in judicial custody. Anujkumar Thapan, another accused, allegedly committed suicide in police custody.&nbsp;

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday attacked the Centre, saying if the BJP-led government will not allow the protesting farmers camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border to enter Delhi then should he "send them to Lahore".&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Farmers from Punjab, led by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, began the 'Delhi Chalo' march on February 13 to press the government to accept their demands which include that the Centre should give a legal guarantee for MSP for crops.
&nbsp;
They were stopped by Haryana Police, who had set up barricades, including cemented blocks, on the Ambala-New Delhi national highway. The farmers have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points ever since.
&nbsp;
"At Khanauri and Shambhu, the border has been fortified with iron nails and barricading so that farmers cannot enter Delhi. The government runs from Delhi so they will go there. If they will not go to Delhi, should I send them to Lahore," Mann said while addressing a public meeting in poll-bound Haryana.
&nbsp;
The Punjab CM said that even four years ago, the farmers were stopped from entering Delhi.
&nbsp;
"As many as 726 farmers died during farmers' protest against now repealed farm laws when they were stopped earlier," he added.
 Speaking at the event in Hisar's Barwala, Mann alleged that the people of Haryana gave a chance to different parties but they all looted the state.
 "If a doctor is not able to cure an ailment then the doctor should be changed," the AAP leader said, adding that like Delhi and Punjab voters, people of Haryana should also "vote for 'badlav' (change) this time".
 Mann touched upon several initiatives of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) governments in Punjab and Delhi.&nbsp;In Punjab, 43,000 government jobs have been given purely on a merit basis, the chief minister claimed.
&nbsp;
"There have been paper leak incidents in Haryana but in Punjab, you will not hear such things," Mann added.
&nbsp;
He said Punjab and Haryana are brothers. "We may have become separate states but our hearts are one," Mann said.
&nbsp;
"We are giving 600 units of free electricity to everyone per billing cycle of two months in Punjab," he said.
&nbsp;
Mann said the AAP government in Delhi has reformed government schools. "Children of poor families are cracking top competitive exams in Delhi now," he said.
&nbsp;
"We have taken government to people's doorsteps to facilitate them and make their lives better," Mann said.
&nbsp;
He urged the people of Haryana not to be carried away by the promises being made by the BJP and Congress.
&nbsp;
"Earlier, they (BJP and Congress) used to rule by turns and people had no other option, but now they have an alternative in AAP," Mann said.
&nbsp;
"BJP has been in power for 10 years, did they give you any job, did they undertake development," he asked while addressing the gathering.
 "I am told if it rains for 1 minutes in Barwala, people have to take out boats, such is the situation," Mann said.

Attacking the BJP government at the Centre, he said during the Lok Sabha polls, the saffron party talked of "400 paar" but now they are running their government with the support of allies.

"Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal belongs to Haryana and he changed the direction of the country's politics. He had said the BJP would change the constitution if they got an overwhelming majority. Thankfully, they did not get a majority, otherwise, they would have changed the constitution," Mann said.

Should I send protesting farmers to Lahore: Punjab CM Mann

The Kerala government on Friday announced that it would grant Rs five lakh each to the participants of the Paris Olympics from the state.

State Sports Minister V Abdurahiman on Friday said Rs five lakh has been allotted to Chief Athletics Coach Radhakrishnan Nair also.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;The amount has been allotted to Mohammed Anas, Mohammed Ajmal (both part of the relay team), Abdulla Aboobacaker (triple jump), P R Sreejesh (hockey) and HS Prannoy (badminton),&rdquo; the minister said in a release.
&nbsp;
He said the amount has been allotted to the sportspersons for the practice and other Olympic-related arrangements for them.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;We have great expectations from our hockey team which bagged the medal last time. Prannoy is also in good form,&rdquo; the minister said and wished all the Olympics participants good luck.&nbsp;

The first to spot the Pakistani intruders in Kargil, Tashi Namgyal says he saw a few men breaking rocks and clearing the snow on the mountain, but it was the absence of any footsteps on the Indian side that sent alarm bells ringing.

Namgyal forgot all about his yak and rushed back to inform the Indian Army outpost.
&nbsp;
"The men were dressed in black uniforms and were building a post with rocks. My job was to report; identifying who they were was the Army's job,&rdquo; Namgyal told PTI Videos.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;Eight days after my report, the fighting began. The Pakistanis fired first, and then our Army advanced. The Indian Army eventually succeeded and drove the enemy back," Namgyal said.
&nbsp;
He was the first person to report the intrusion into Kargil by Pakistani soldiers that days later turned into the Kargil War between India and Pakistan.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The victory&nbsp;
After receiving Namgyal's information, Indian soldiers observed more than 50 soldiers at another route in the area.
 The war broke out from the Batalik region and further infiltrations were made in Dras, Kaksar and Mushkoh sectors.
&nbsp;
According to official figures, more than 500 Indian soldiers laid down their lives and over 1,300 were injured, fighting a battle in which the elements and altitude were not in their favour.
&nbsp;
Kargil war veteran retired Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav recalled his time on the battlefield.
&nbsp;
"It is a matter of good fortune for me that I was in front of the commanders. As a soldier I got a chance to fight in these mountains with these commanders.
&nbsp;
"Under their leadership we got good planning and leadership quality and that is why these 19-20 year old boys wrote the history of the country with their blood," Yadav told PTI.
&nbsp;
A resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav is the youngest recipient of India's highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra, awarded for his valour during the Kargil War at the age of 19.

Another ex-serviceman, Honorary Lieutenant of the Ladakh Scouts Tashi Tsering, said he was among the first to be called in to defend the country.
&nbsp;
Tsering, along with six others from the Ladakh Scouts infantry regiment, joined the platoon of Major Manoj Pandey of the Gorkha Rifles (GR).&nbsp; Pandey received a posthumous Param Vir Chakra for his role in the conflict.
&nbsp;
"By the time we reached to attack, the terrorists were on the hill... there was a terrorist on every hill and not giving us a chance to even raise our heads. We had soldiers of 10 GR, and six Ladakh Scouts with us and as soon as we reached, they started firing at us,&rdquo; Tsering told PTI.
&nbsp;
After an initial setback, as two soldiers were hit, the soldiers decided to attack the same place the next day to push the enemy back.
&nbsp;
Tsering feels especially proud that the Ladakh Scouts were among the first infantry regiments to launch an attack on the enemy.
&nbsp;
Another story of valour is told by Subedar Haji Mohammad, who had retired just two months before the Kargil war. He was recalled by the Army to serve as a guide.
&nbsp;
"Our soldiers fought bravely despite casualties, kept fighting till the end, they did not retreat until we captured our posts&hellip; The condition was such that where I was standing, bombs were being dropped, there was no place left where bombs had not been dropped,&rdquo; Mohammad told PTI.

Across the picturesque land that is Kargil in Ladakh, the war of 1999 is an indelible memory for the residents of Batalik, about 70 kilometres from Kargil town in the narrow Indus River valley near the Line of Control.
&nbsp;
People are still terrified, said Ghulam Hussain, a Batalik local, recounting the initial days of the war without food and shelter.
&nbsp;
"The first shelling from Pakistan started in Batalik in 1999... I was 24 years old then. The children still don't know what happened. We faced many hardships, and for weeks, we didn't even get food. We moved the children, elders, and women to safer places like Sanjak. Some children still have splinters in their hands,&rdquo; Hussain said.
&nbsp;
Another local, Mohammad Zafran, recalled nights when shelling from the Pakistani side sent people &ldquo;hiding in the stables, feeling very scared&rdquo;.
&nbsp;
When the conflict intensified, children, women, and the elderly were moved to safer locations, and young locals stayed to assist the Indian Army in transporting ammunition.
&nbsp;
"We used to sit together with the Army at that time. The Army used to be ahead of us and we used to walk behind them, taking the load. Eventually, they expelled Pakistan from there and then we settled down here," Zafran added.

Known as the gateway to Ladakh, Drass witnessed some of the most intense battles between the Indian and Pakistani forces during the war.
&nbsp;
Barkat Ali, who was then deputy tehsildar of Drass, recalled the shelling during the war.
&nbsp;
"There was shelling not only in Mushkoh Valley but throughout Drass. The area from India Gate Zojila to Kaksar Bridge is called Drass. This area, consisting of 19 revenue villages, was heavily shelled except two or three villages. I joined as Naib Tehsildar on May 13, 1999, and the shelling began the same day," he recounted.

On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of Operation Vijay, declaring victory after a nearly three-month battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh.&nbsp;

The Karnataka Cabinet on Friday decided to rename neighbouring Ramanagara district as &lsquo;Bengaluru South&rsquo;.

The proposal to rename the district consisting of Ramanagara, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna and Harohalli taluks had gained steam recently with a Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar-led delegation meeting the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and submitting him a memorandum to raise the pitch.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;We have decided to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South&hellip;. It is being done keeping in mind &lsquo;Brand Bengaluru&rsquo; and based on the demand of the people there. The Revenue Department will start the process,&rdquo; Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil said.
&nbsp;
Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, chaired by the Chief Minister, he said: &ldquo;Only the name of the district will change, remaining all names (of taluks) will remain the same.&rdquo; Ramanagara town, about 50 kms from here, will remain as the headquarters of the renamed district.

&ldquo;People of Ramanagara want to come under Brand Bengaluru. It is the opinion of people, people of the district and certain prominent personalities of the district that they want Brand Bengaluru,&rdquo; he said in response to a question.

Ramanagara is the home district of Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress chief. He represents Kanakapura Assembly segment in the district, and had first mooted the proposal in October last year.

Union Minister and Janata Dal(Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister of the JD(S)-BJP coalition, when Ramanagara district was carved out in August 2007.

Taking a dig at the proposal, Kumaraswamy had recently said that he would reverse the plan, if implemented, in the event of him becoming Chief Minister again.
&nbsp;
Kumaraswamy, a former Chief Minister, had also alleged that the motive behind the proposal was to exploit real estate opportunities there.
&nbsp;
He had earlier threatened to go on a fast-unto-death if the Karnataka government decides to go-ahead with the proposal to rename the district.

Ramanagara district is the political turf of Kumaraswamy as he has represented Ramanagara and Channapatna Assembly segments, and also had been an MP from the region.

The renaming of the district has gained significance ahead of Channapatna Assembly bypolls &mdash; the date for which is yet to be announced &mdash; necessitated following Kumaraswamy&rsquo;s election to Lok Sabha from Mandya.

Asked whether the decision was taken, keeping the election in mind, Patil said: &ldquo;It was not done with election in mind, it was based on demand from people and public representatives there.&rdquo; On whether the renaming was done &ldquo;keeping real estate in mind,&rdquo; he said: &ldquo;If asset&rsquo;s value goes up it is beneficial for the dwellers there&hellip; this proves our decision is right and is favourable to people in Ramanagra district; we will be satisfying public emotion also.&rdquo;&nbsp;

The Rouse Avenue court has postponed the recording of evidence in the high-profile sexual harassment case against former MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. This delay comes due to a crucial piece of evidence&mdash;a mobile phone seized during the investigation&mdash;still being held at the Forensic Science Lab (FSL) in Rohini, Delhi.

On Friday, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot decided to defer the chief examination of Constable Mukesh Kumar. Constable Kumar was involved in the investigation and had travelled to the village of Singh in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, where two mobile phones were confiscated. These phones are essential to the case and remain at the FSL, impacting the progress of the trial.
&nbsp;
In the meantime, the court has summoned a victim and a witness named Rashmi to present their evidence. The court has also made provisions for the victim to give her testimony in a vulnerable witness room if she feels uncomfortable testifying in the courtroom.

The matter is now scheduled for August 6. Earlier, on July 11, the court had directed the trial to begin and the statements of prosecution witnesses to be recorded. This order follows the formal framing of charges against Singh and Vinod Tomar on May 21. Both defendants have denied the allegations and requested a trial.

Advocate Rajiv Mohan, representing Singh, withdrew an application seeking documents related to Singh's foreign travel and hotel stays, with plans to file a new application with specific details.

On May 10, the court had decided that there was enough evidence to proceed with the case against Singh under sections 354 and 354A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for sexual harassment and outraging the modesty of women.

Singh was discharged from allegations made by a sixth wrestler. Similarly, charges were framed against Vinod Tomar under section 506 (part 1) of the IPC, related to one woman, with other allegations being dropped.

The Delhi Police charge sheet, filed on June 15, 2023, details the case against Singh and Tomar. The charge sheet includes statements from 44 witnesses and evidence gathered throughout the investigation. Singh faces allegations of sexual harassment, molestation, and stalking, while Tomar is charged with offenses related to threats.

The chargesheet also contains photographs and other evidence collected during the investigation. The Delhi Police filed two FIRs based on complaints from women wrestlers: one under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which was later cancelled for a minor wrestler, and another for various allegations made by the wrestlers.

Both accused are being prosecuted based on the evidence and complaints presented. The case remains under judicial scrutiny as the court prepares for the next stages of the trial.

Court delays Brij Bhushan case due to evidence issues

India and the United States made a significant stride in cultural preservation by signing their first-ever cultural property agreement aimed at preventing the illegal trafficking of antiquities and facilitating the return of cultural artifacts to their countries of origin.

The agreement was signed by Union Cultural Secretary Govind Mohan and US envoy Eric Garcetti on Friday during the ongoing 46th session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam.
&nbsp;
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who was present during the signing, stated that the agreement would pave the way for a smooth repatriation process of historic artifacts from the US to India.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;There are 297 items lying in the US, ready to be repatriated,&rdquo; Shekhawat noted.
&nbsp;
Since 1976, India has successfully repatriated 358 antiquities, with 345 of these retrieved since 2014.
&nbsp;
The agreement is designed to prevent illegal trafficking and ensure the return of antiquities to their rightful places.

The Ministry of Culture emphasized that the signing of this agreement aligns with international efforts to protect cultural heritage.

In a statement, the US Embassy highlighted that with this agreement, India joins 29 other nations that have established similar bilateral cultural property agreements with the US.

India secures agreement with US for return of antiquities

The existing building of Vaigai Tamil Nadu House will be demolished, considering the reclassification of New Delhi into Seismic Zone&ndash;IV, and a new one, which is structurally designed to withstand seismic forces and vetted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, will be built.

The chief minister laid the foundation stone through videoconference from the Secretariat here in the presence of state Ministers and senior officials, while senior government officials and MPs belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies participated in the event at the national capital.

The Public Department has accorded the administrative sanction of Rs 257 crore for the construction of the new building, an official release said.

The reconstructed Tamil Nadu House will have a VVIP block and guest house over three basement floors, a ground floor and six upper floors, with the staff quarters being in three basement floors, ground floor and seven upper floors, with a total plinth area of 3 lakh sqft.

Further, the complex will consist of a VVIP suite, 39 suite rooms, 60 deluxe rooms, nine dormitories with 72 bedding capacity, a multi-purpose hall, three dining halls, a lounge, an exhibition hall, VVIPs&rsquo; camp office, meeting rooms, fitness centre, business centre, library and other amenities, the release said.&nbsp;

Tamil Nadu House to come up in New Delhi

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has likened his bete noire and predecessor YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to the notorious Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar for turning politics into a criminal enterprise.

&ldquo;During the YSR Congress Party&rsquo;s rule between 2019 and 2024, the law and order had reached a new low and the state had emerged as the ganja capital of the country. The drug menace has penetrated deeply into society, bringing national infamy to Andhra Pradesh,&rdquo; Naidu said while releasing a white paper on the law and order situation in the state.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;Only one person can be compared to what happened in Andhra, and it is Pablo Escobar,&rdquo; he said in the assembly, referring to the alleged drug menace in the state.
&nbsp;
Asserting that building a crime-free state was the goal of his government, Naidu assured the people that peace and security that were fully damaged in the previous government would be restored. Stringent action would be taken against anyone, however big he or she may be, if any disruption was caused to law and order in the state.

Recalling how Escobar, the drug lord whose reign of terror shook Colombia in the 1970s and 1980s, illegally sold drugs worth billions of dollars and went on to kill leaders and politicians who opposed him, the Chief Minister said the previous regime too encouraged illegal drug trade and went after political rivals.
&nbsp;
With the &ldquo;Medellin Cartel&rdquo; that he founded, Escobar had established a corridor to sell drugs and allegedly earned up to $90 billion. According to the CM, Escobar had emerged as the richest drug lord in the world and likened him to the opposition leader.

&ldquo;One can become the richest person by selling drugs also. You can become so by doing business, but what was the intention of the former CM? He thought Tata, Reliance and Adani-like people had money and how can I (Reddy) earn more than them,&rdquo; said Naidu.

Calling Escobar a &ldquo;narco-terrorist&rdquo;, Naidu alleged that a similar situation had emerged in Andhra Pradesh under the YSRCP regime when ganja was allegedly freely available.
&nbsp;
Elaborating on the law-and-order situation, the CM alleged that the erstwhile YSRCP government had &ldquo;terrorised&rdquo; the state by cracking down on opposition parties, the general public and other sections with vendetta politics.
&nbsp;
He alleged that the YSRCP government had troubled people using the police force as a &ldquo;torture tool&rdquo; and sidelined officials who did not cooperate.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;The first and foremost thing that any government should do in a democracy is to give assurance to protect the lives and assets of people, including the protection of women, but, sadly, this kind of uncivilised thing could happen in a civilised world,&rdquo; Naidu said.

According to the TDP supremo, 2,560 cases were allegedly registered against party leaders and activists, which included criminal cases invoking stringent laws such as the SC &amp; ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and others.

When Naidu asked the legislators from the ruling coalition how many were booked in cases under the YSRCP regime, a majority of them stood up in the House.

Further, the chief minister said that 17 cases were allegedly registered against him and that he was restrained from visiting the victims of the LG Polymers industrial accident in Vizag and attending several other political programmes.

The chief minister said 10,377 crimes occurred against SC communities, which included 192 murders and 108 abductions, while ST communities allegedly endured 1,768 crimes against them.&nbsp;

Chandrababu Naidu likens bete noire Jagan to Pablo Escobar

&nbsp;announced on Friday that an investigation by the state taxation department's enforcement wing has uncovered fake billing scams worth thousands of crores of rupees. The scams involved two firms dealing in gold, which generated fake bills worth Rs 860 crore, and 303 firms dealing in iron, which were involved in fake billings of Rs 4,044 crore.
&nbsp;
Additionally, 68 firms were found to have engaged in fake billing of Rs 533 crore after getting their firms registered in other names. Cheema explained that the enforcement wing found that a firm dealing in gold in Amritsar had made fake bills worth Rs 336 crore for the sale and purchase of gold. Similarly, a Ludhiana-based firm had made a gold sale-purchase against fake bills worth Rs 424 crore.
&nbsp;
Cheema, who also holds the Excise and Taxation department portfolio, said, "On inspection of a firm dealing in gold in Amritsar, the enforcement wing found that fake bills of gold worth Rs 336 crore were made by the said firm for sale and purchase of gold".
&nbsp;
The minister also revealed that 303 firms had made fake sale-purchase of iron worth Rs 4,044 crore, with 11 firms registered in Punjab, 86 firms in other states, and 206 firms with the central government. The state taxation department has taken action against all 11 firms, cancelling or suspending their registration, and blocking an outstanding ITC of Rs 89.7 crore.

"A total fake ITC of Rs 707 crore was claimed in this case," he said.
&nbsp;
Cheema also mentioned that 68 firms involved in fake billing registered in other persons' names had been identified, with five persons named in an FIR filed in Ludhiana. The department is taking steps to prevent tax evasion by linking GST registration in the state with Aadhaar-based biometric authentication to identify and catch persons registering in others' names.

Punjab FM exposes fake billing scam over ₹5,000 crores

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday made it clear that a typical 22-coach mail or express train comprises 12 non-AC coaches designated for general and sleeper class passengers, while the remaining eight coaches are air-conditioned.

Vaishnaw's remarks, delivered in the Rajya Sabha came in response to questions from IUML MP Haris Beeran. The Union Minister stressed on the government&rsquo;s commitment to maintaining a significant number of non-AC coaches amid rising passenger demand. He pointed out that two-thirds of the total coaches currently in operation are non-AC, reinforcing the Railways' focus on affordable travel options. 
The minister acknowledged that passenger traffic has fluctuated significantly from 2019 to 2024, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Indian Railways (IR) operates various types of regular time-tabled trains, including suburban, short-distance, and long-distance services," he explained, noting that these trains cater to diverse passenger segments. 
Vaishnaw spotlighted that the current policy ensures greater accommodation for passengers utilizing general and non-AC sleeper coaches.

Furthermore, the introduction of Amrit Bharat services, which offer high-quality non-AC train options, aims to enhance travel experiences for budget-conscious passengers.
&nbsp;
To mitigate overcrowding, the Railways is actively taking steps to increase capacity during peak travel times.
&nbsp;
"We operate special train services during festivals and holidays, along with augmenting train loads, both permanently and temporarily, to accommodate additional demand," he stated, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance passenger convenience.

Looking ahead, the Railways plans to manufacture 10,000 new non-AC coaches, including general class and sleeper class options, in response to the rising demand for affordable travel.

Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty surged 428.75 points, or 1.76%, to close at an all-time high of 24,834.85. A remarkable 47 out of the Nifty's constituents closed in the green, while only three ended lower.

The Sensex and Nifty had been on a downward trajectory since last Friday. Over the five consecutive days of losses leading up to Thursday, the Sensex plummeted 1,303.66 points, or 1.60%, and the Nifty fell by 394.75 points, or 1.59%.

On Friday, all Sensex shares except for Nestle closed in the green. Bharti Airtel emerged as the biggest gainer, rising by over 4.51%. Odisha is one of the states having the highest secondary level (Class 9 and 10) dropout rate in India at 27.29 per cent, said the Odisha Economic Survey 2023-24 report which was published by the state government on Wednesday.

The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) at primary and upper primary levels is also lower than the all-India average.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The report said while the students&rsquo; retention rate in the state has improved at the primary, elementary and secondary levels between 2017-18 and 2021-22, Odisha still has the highest secondary level dropout rate.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
This despite the fact that there has been a 22.2 per cent reduction in dropout rate at the secondary level between 2014-15 and 2021-22.
&nbsp;
GER in Odisha at upper primary, secondary and higher secondary levels is 91.3 pc, 80.4 and 43.6 pc, respectively. However, GER at primary and upper primary levels is below the all-India average, it added.
&nbsp;
The last UDISE+ 2021-22 report of the Ministry of Education had pointed out that at the secondary level, 27.3 per cent students (29.2 per cent boys and 25.2 per cent girls) dropped out of schools before their transit to higher secondary level in Odisha. This was the highest in the country followed by Meghalaya at 21.7 and Bihar at 20.5.

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan is likely to run for the position of the chancellor of his alma mater Oxford in the UK from his prison cell through an online ballot, his close aide and media outlets report.
 Khan, 71, has been incarcerated since August 2023 after he was arrested under several cases and convicted for some, the longest being nine years as of date.&nbsp;

Founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party, Khan was the prime minister of Pakistan from August 2018 to April 2022.

Khan studied economics and politics at Keble College, Oxford in 1972.&nbsp;

He played Test cricket for Pakistan from 1971 and also captained the cricket team of Oxford University.&nbsp;

In 2005, Khan became the chancellor of Bradford University and served in the post till 2014.

&nbsp; For the first time, the elections for the chancellor will be held online compared to the traditional process in which the graduates are required to attend the process in full academic dress.

On the credit front, Sarma noted that bank loans disbursed increased from ₹80,871 crore in 2021 to ₹1.27 lakh crore in 2024. Additionally, the state's traditional Credit/Deposit (C/D) ratio has improved from 32% to 58%, as per the economic survey.

Sarma also addressed the unemployment rate, revealing a decrease from 8% in 2022-23 to 6.1% currently, indicating a positive trend in job creation.

A notable body of tram enthusiasts in Kolkata enquired why the West Bengal government is bent on shutting down an environment-friendly mode of transport, albeit the Calcutta High Court directive that efforts be taken to preserve it.

Calcutta Tram Users&rsquo; Association in a press conference on July 25 noted that the high court had formed an advisory committee in 2023 to submit a report to the court as to how the tram services can be restored and preserved in the city of Kolkata.&nbsp;

At the press meet, the members of the association highlighted that the government ignored the recommendations of the Committee Members.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Earlier this month, a report emerged that the State government was planning to shut down the 151-year-old tramway, except for preserving one route for the purpose of tourism; and considering that it did not deny the report, it is being assumed that the iconic Kolkata tram is soon going to say goodbye to the city and to India.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
July 25th&rsquo;s press conference was the association&rsquo;s first move against the possibility of the tram&rsquo;s closure.
&nbsp;
Members present spoke about several cities in the world, which had tram services have progressively enhanced and modernised their tram infrastructure, such as Berlin, Melbourne and Hong Kong.&nbsp;

Some other cities, like Sydney and London, have reopened their trams with contemporary infrastructure after they had been completely closed.&nbsp;
But West Bengal appears set for an irrational decision to remove trams from the city rather than reopening the service.

State government&rsquo;s take on the issue

The state government is of the view that it would replace trams with electronic trolley buses, as it has no plans to extend the existing tram routes in the city since the streets are already congested.

Although it notes that this is an environment friendly transport mode, tram services can only be continued if its routes could be extended.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Another drawback which the government highlights of continuing with trams services is its speed.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The government is not willing to continue with a slow-moving transport system, as none wants to use it in this fast-moving world. Also, owing to its speed, trams also lead to traffic congestion.

Lack of road space for tram lines was also given as a measure.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Hence, the government is advocating for an electronic-trolley bus, which is supposed to come from Poland.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The plan is to run a pilot project on an experimental basis of operating this trolley buses using the overhead electric wires which are already in place for trams.

Is Kolkata bidding farewell to iconic trams?

Minister of State in Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu has caught his erstwhile colleague Charanjit Singh Channi on the wrong foot in the parliament. Bittu, who was a third-generation Congressman switched over to the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 General Elections.
&nbsp;
This time he contested on BJP&rsquo;s ticket from Ludhiana and lost. He had earlier represented the Ludhiana parliamentary constituency twice as a Congress MP.
&nbsp;
Channi is a former Punjab Chief Minister, who served the office for about six months after the Congress unceremoniously removed Capt Amarinder Singh. Channi and Bittu were known to be quite close to each other.
&nbsp;
Channi&rsquo;s assembly segment, Chamkaur Sahib falls in the Anandpur Sahib parliamentary constituency, Bittu represented from 2009 to 2014.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
When Channi visibly went overboard to criticize the BJP government and equated it with the East India Company, Bittu rose to object to his (Channi&rsquo;s) remarks.
&nbsp;
Bittu countered Channi by subtly referring to the foreign origins of the former Congress president Ms Sonia Gandhi.
&nbsp;
When Channi told Bittu that his grandfather and former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh had actually &ldquo;died&rdquo; the day Bittu joined the BJP, he (Bittu) hit him back hard and fast.
&nbsp;
Then it was a no holds barred and free for all between the two. Bittu referred to Channi&rsquo;s assets, which he (Bittu) alleged were worth thousands of crores, questioning the source of such assets as he comes from an ordinary family with no visible sources of such huge income. He even accused Channi of facing &ldquo;me too&rdquo; charges.
&nbsp;
It ended up as a bad day for Channi. Not only was he countered and snubbed by Bittu in the parliament, his own party disowned his statement in the parliament. Channi had suggested that jailed Khadoor Sahib MP should be allowed to attend the parliament.
&nbsp;
Congress general secretary, Communications, Jairam Ramesh, later in a statement on &lsquo;X&rsquo; clarified that what Channi said in the parliament was his personal opinion and not that of the Congress party.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
At the end of the day, Channi was left alone to defend himself. While the PCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who is also an MP representing Ludhiana, where he defeated Bittu, had initially supported Channi, saying Bittu was only trying to please his masters, everyone fell silent afterwards.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
However, after the Congress party officially distanced itself from Channi&rsquo;s statement on Amritpal, all the Congress leaders turned quiet, refusing any comments.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Several Congress leaders admitted privately that Channi was himself to be blamed as he had no reason to go overboard and in the spur of the moment deviating from the party's line.
&nbsp;
The Congress party has always asserted its &ldquo;zero tolerance&rdquo; towards all sorts of extremism of all denominations. By pleading for Amritpal&rsquo;s release from jail, Channi placed his party in a defensive position as the BJP would quickly pounce on it.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Amritpal is an extremist and radical preacher, who has publicly espoused the cause of Khalistan. He reiterated his stand, even after his mother had told the media that he did not subscribe to the ideology of Khalistan. He snubbed his mother, saying her statement did not reflect his views, saying demanding Khalsa Raj was no sin.
&nbsp;
Bittu has always and exceptionally been aggressively vocal against any sort of extremism and demands for Khalistan.
&nbsp;
He inherits the legacy of his grandfather, who was assassinated by Punjab militants in a suicide bomb attack. Beant Singh is credited with wiping out militancy in Punjab. One section of people accuses his regime of having resorted to excesses that led to the killing of so many innocent youth also.
&nbsp;
Bittu has always taken an aggressive position against extremism and separatism. In fact, he was probably the only leader in Congress, who would take a public stand on such issues.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
With him now being in the BJP, a party known for aggressive nationalism and zero tolerance to terrorism, Bittu now has a better platform to perform at and he is doing it exceptionally well.

Bittu catches Channi on the wrong foot

West Bengal BJP president Dr. Sukanta Majumdar's recent request to the Centre to "include" the northern part of West Bengal with the "northeast" has ignited a political firestorm within the state.

The Border Roads Organisation will build the tunnel between Manali and Leh along the Nimu Padam Darcha Road, at an elevation of 4,800 metres.

This 7.1-km-long twin-tube tunnel, which includes cross passages every 500 meters, is a significant strategic project for the BJP government's border area development plans, particularly in view of ongoing tensions with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

As an all-weather tunnel, it is expected to reduce travel time across the Shinkun area to just 30 minutes, significantly boosting social and economic development in both Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.

Previously, supplies to remote defence posts often required expensive air transport or long, difficult overland routes, especially during winter. The tunnel will streamline logistics, leading to lower transportation costs.

Air transport to remote areas like Ladakh can cost between Rs 8 lakh to 12.5 lakh per metric tonne, whereas overland transport through the Shinkun La Tunnel is expected to be significantly cheaper at Rs 1.5 lakh to 3 lakh per metric tonne.

This switch could save the Indian Army approximately Rs 67 crore to 108 crore annually when transporting 1,000 metric tonnes of supplies.

The Karnataka government has sent a request to the Ministry of Civil Aviation to rename four airports in the state after eminent personalities.

The four are &mdash; Vijayapura airport, Hubballi airport, Belagavi airport and Shivamogga airport, and the proposed names by the State government are Jagajyothi Basaveshwara airport, Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna airport, Kittur Rani Chennamma airport and Rashtrakavi Dr KV Puttappa (Kuvempu) airport, respectively.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, replying to an unstarred question on the proposed naming of airports, in the Lok Sabha during the ongoing session of Parliament, gave details of 10 states that had proposed names for existing and upcoming airports.

&ldquo;In general, airports are known by the name of the city where they are located, unless another specific name is proposed by the respective State government supported by a resolution passed in the State Legislative Assembly, which is then considered in consultation with other ministries/departments and then sent to the Union Cabinet for final approval,&rdquo; the Minister said in his reply.

During the legislature session in Belagavi in December 2023, the Karnataka government had said that it was considering the proposal to name the Hubli-Dharwad airport after Sangolli Rayanna and the Belagavi airport after Veera Rani Kittur Chennamma.

During the session, Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister MB Patil had said that only the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had the authority to name an airport and that States could only send a proposal on it in the form of resolutions by the State legislature.

Of the four airports, the ones in Hubballi and Belagavi are operated by the AAI and the Shivamogga and Vijayapura are greenfield airports.

Ajit Doval emphasises counter-terrorism at BIMSTEC meet

The Food Safety wing of the state, intensifying its attempts to curb laxity in providing hygienic food, has shut one-fourth shawarma shops in Kerala.&nbsp;

As part of the monsoon inspections by the Food Safety Department, the squads inspected over 500 shawarma shops for a period of nearly two months. As a result, nearly 55 shawarma outlets have been shut and over 100 firms have received cautionary notices.
&nbsp;
Why this crackdown on Shawarma outlets?&nbsp;
&nbsp;
It has been learnt that these places were selling shawarma without following the special food safety and hygiene guidelines issued by the department in preparing shawarma.
&nbsp;
The Food Safety wing had last year issued the special guidelines to be followed by all food outlets in making shawarma, as general laxity in maintaining food safety guidelines had put this particular food item at particular risk for triggering frequent food poisoning episodes in many parts of the state.
&nbsp;
Apart from hygiene specifications, the guidelines state in particular that the meat be cooked continuously at full heat &mdash; 15 minutes for chicken and 30 minutes for beef &mdash; without any interruption.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Pieces of meat sliced from the cone must be submitted to a secondary cooking step to ensure that it is fully cooked. Secondary step can be in the form of grilling, baking in the oven.
&nbsp;
Moreover, raw eggs have been asked to avoided for the preparation of mayonnaise sauce, which is served with the dish. The sauce often becomes the source of bacterial contamination when it is prepared and left out.
&nbsp;
Instead, pasteurised eggs should be used for making mayonnaise or else branded.
&nbsp;
Also mayonnaise once prepared cannot be stored at room temperature for more than two hours. And when stored for 2 days then it should be below 4 degrees Centigrade.&nbsp;

Shawarma takeaway packs in these eateries did not bear the label noting the date and time of making the item and the warning that it is best consumed within an hour.

Among these heroes stands the Naga Regiment, whose indomitable spirit and exceptional combat skills left an indelible mark on the annals of Indian military history.
&nbsp;
Formed in 1970, the Naga Regiment brought together soldiers from Nagaland and adjoining northeastern states, embodying a fierce sense of loyalty and bravery.
&nbsp;
During the Kargil conflict, two battalions of this regiment played a pivotal role in various operations, demonstrating exemplary courage and tactical acumen.
<h3>Early deployment and initial operations</h3>
The 1 NAGA battalion was the first to reach the Kargil sector, arriving in Drass on May 11, 1999.
&nbsp;
At this stage, intelligence on the extent of the infiltration was scant, and the situation was rapidly unfolding.
&nbsp;
The battalion's initial task was to evict the infiltrators, launching immediate patrols to probe the snow-clad mountain tops.
&nbsp;
By June 1999, the battle for Tololing was underway, and 1 NAGA was assigned to provide a firm base for the 2 Rajputana Rifles, preventing enemy reinforcements.
&nbsp;
Among the soldiers was Captain N. Kenguruse, whose heroism would later earn him the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.
&nbsp;
Following the successful capture of Tololing, 1 NAGA was tasked with capturing the enemy post known as &lsquo;Black Tooth&rsquo;.
<h3>Fierce battles and recognition</h3>
The battle for 'Black Tooth' was intense. Sepoy Asuli Mao was awarded the Vir Chakra, while Subedar Heni Mao received the Sena Medal for their valour.

Sadly, Sepoy Asuli Mao was later fatally wounded in another operation.
&nbsp;
By mid-July, 1 NAGA had secured the &lsquo;PIMPLE&rsquo; complex, later renamed Naga Hill in honour of their determination and bravery.

However, the enemy still held 'Point 5,060'. In a daring daylight attack, 1 NAGA cleared the area, suffering 10 fatalities and 52 non-fatal casualties in the process.
&nbsp;
For their gallantry, Naik (later Naib Subedar) Khusi Man Gurung and Sepoy Asuli Mao were awarded the Vir Chakra, while Subedar (later Honorary Captain) Heni Mao, Havildar Tam Bahadur, and Captain Vijay Kumar (RMO) received the Sena Medal.&nbsp;Captain S Ashok was mentioned in dispatches.
&nbsp;
The battalion's achievements were recognised with the Northern Command Unit Appreciation, Battle Honour &lsquo;DRASS&rsquo;, and Theatre Honour &lsquo;KARGIL&rsquo;.

Their actions during the conflict set a standard of excellence and bravery.
<h3>The 2 NAGA battalion in action</h3>
On June 27, 1999, the 2 NAGA battalion was inducted into the Mushkoh Valley after a successful counter-insurgency tenure in Northern Kashmir. Tasked with an offensive operation, the unit captured the 'Twin Bump' as part of the &lsquo;Point 4,875&rsquo; complex.
&nbsp;
In a daring daylight raid, they targeted an enemy mortar position, causing significant enemy casualties and capturing a large cache of arms, ammunition, and equipment.
&nbsp;
Despite the hostile terrain and heavy enemy fire, the battalion moved up under speculative fire, achieving total surprise. Following an intense firefight, the &lsquo;Twin Bump&rsquo; complex was successfully captured.
&nbsp;
The unit continued its advance, destroying an enemy mortar position on the &lsquo;Western Spur&rsquo;, facilitating the movement of their own troops.
&nbsp;
The battalion suffered 18 fatalities and 10 injuries during these operations. For their actions, they were awarded one Maha Vir Chakra, one Vir Chakra, one Yudh Seva Medal, five Sena Medals, eight mentions in dispatches, two Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Commendation Cards, and five Army Commander Commendation Cards.

The Chief of the Army Staff honoured the unit with the &lsquo;Unit Citation&rsquo;, and they were the first to occupy defences in the Mushkoh Valley post-Operation Vijay.

Captain N. Kenguruse, a son of Nagaland, remains a legendary figure for his bravery during the Kargil War.

On June 28, 1999, in the Lone Hill of the Drass sector, he led a critical mission to recapture the &lsquo;Black Rock&rsquo; post at an altitude of 16,000 feet in freezing temperatures.

India's shooting team seeks to end medal drought

'Cheap publicity', says Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, after he appeared before an MP-MLA court, today, in a defamation case filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra. Gandhi rejected claims of giving any statement for anyone which could lead to a defamation case, said his lawyer Kashi Prasad Shukla, in conversation with the media.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The next hearing of the case is scheduled for August 12. The petitioner's statement will then be recorded. Sources said Gandhi need not appear in the court on that date.
&nbsp;
The case was filed against the Congress leader on August 4, 2018, accusing Gandhi of making objectionable statements against the then Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah.
&nbsp;
Advocate Santosh Kumar Pandey, representing Mishra, said Gandhi recorded his statement before the judge and the evidence will be presented on August 12.
&nbsp;
This is not the first time Gandhi has appeared in court for this case. He had previously appeared on February 20, when he was granted bail. On Friday, a large number of Congress workers gathered outside the court, and the premises were heavily secured.

The journey to this recognition began with the state government submitting a detailed dossier to the Prime Minister in 2023. Sarma credited Modi's decisive initiative in endorsing the Moidams for UNESCO nomination, noting the significant impact of such a recommendation, as each country can only submit one entry per year.

Sarma highlighted the broader cultural implications of this recognition, noting, "This marks the first cultural property from the Northeast to achieve this prestigious tag."

World Heritage sites are categorized into cultural, natural, and mixed types. Prior to the Moidams' inclusion, the Northeast lacked representation in the cultural heritage category.

&nbsp;Assam's Kaziranga and Manas National Parks are recognised under the natural category, with a total of seven such sites across India.
&nbsp;
The Directorate of Archaeology in Assam meticulously prepared the nomination dossier, which was subsequently submitted to the Archaeological Survey of India. This effort culminated in the Chief Minister's formal request to the Prime Minister, emphasising the cultural and historical importance of the Moidams.

Significant state support has bolstered the Moidams' preservation and recognition.
&nbsp;
In 2019-20, the Assam government allocated Rs 25 crore for the protection, conservation, and development of the Charaideo Archaeological site.
&nbsp;
The Moidams represent the late medieval (13th&mdash;19th century CE) mound burial tradition of the Tai Ahoms dynasty. Of the 386 Moidams explored, 90 royal burials at Charaideo are the best-preserved examples, showcasing the dynasty's burial practices and reverence for their ancestors.
&nbsp;
Initially, the deceased, along with their personal belongings, were interred in the Moidams.
&nbsp;
However, after the 18th century, the Ahom rulers adopted Hindu cremation practices, later entombing the cremated remains in the Moidams at Charaideo.
&nbsp;
For the Tai Ahoms, who practice ancestor worship, Charaideo remains the final resting place of their Swargadeos (Kings who are like Gods) and other royals.
&nbsp;
This recognition by UNESCO not only preserves this rich legacy but also invites the world to explore and appreciate Assam's profound historical and cultural heritage.

CM Sarma hails PM Modi for 'Moidams' UNESCO inclusion

Keeping high expectations, former India captain Ravi Shastri wants Gautam Gambhir to flourish in his new role as head coach, calling him a 'contemporary' mentor.&nbsp;

Shastri, a former India coach, believes the 42-year-old Gambhir can make an immediate impact in his new role as he is already close to the team, having played with and mentored quite a few players.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The former left-handed opener served as a team mentor for Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.
&nbsp;
"He's (Gambhir) contemporary, he just had a great season in the IPL. I think he's the right age where he's young, he'll come with fresh ideas. He knows most of the players, especially in the white-ball format, having been part of teams in the IPL. So I think it's refreshing," Shastri said on the recent episode of The ICC Review.
&nbsp;
"And we know with Gautam, he's a no-nonsense guy. He'll have his ideas as well. And the good thing for him is he's got a mature team. He's got a settled team, a mature team. I think even though you might think you're mature, you might benefit from some fresh ideas. So I think it'll be interesting times."

Shastri feels managing the workload of players, especially bowlers, will be Gambhir's biggest challenge.

"Obviously, player management becomes the key as a coach. So it'll be interesting to see how he goes. I think he's got the tools, he's got the goods for the job and he's got the experience."

Gambhir's first assignment as India coach is the white-ball series in Sri Lanka which starts with a three-match T20 series in Pallekele on Saturday. With stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from the shortest format after last month's T20 World Cup triumph, Gambhir's other task would be find to find replacements for the trio.
 "There's so many (good India) players out there and it's just about getting the right mix. I think a lot of the players that won this T20 World Cup will still be around two years later (at the 2026 T20 World Cup)," Shastri said.
 "You mentioned the three players who were retired, but barring them, I think most of the others will be still fit to be in that T20 World Cup team two years down the line in India." The former India cricketer feels there will be a problem of plenty for Gambhir.
 "I don't think there's much to be done there. In fact, you will get a problem on your hands because you'll have to choose from the new lot that's coming and there's some real exciting talent there." "It's the other way around. It's how you get those guys in there that they're bursting at the scenes to get it.

There's a queue out there and that will be his biggest challenge, but it's a good headache when you have that kind of talent." Player management is another aspect that will be pivotal to Gambhir's success, believes Shastri.
 "It's a question of just understanding his players as quickly as possible. What their strengths are, what kind of human beings they are and what kind of temperaments do they have? What are their personalities? A lot goes behind the scenes to understand a human being," he said.
 "I think that will be his most important task, which I think again should not be a problem because he's contemporary. He's seen these guys from the outside, he's dealt with a lot of guys who might have played with KKR as well and for Lucknow (Super Giants) when he was there.
 "And he's been around the circuit, the moment he finished cricket and that was not too long ago, he still is around, plays a lot of the legends cricket as well."&nbsp;

The 'Moidams', the iconic mound-burial system of Assam&rsquo;s Ahom dynasty, has been granted the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage tag, marking a significant milestone as the first cultural property from India's northeast to receive this honour.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The announcement came during the ongoing 46th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in India.
 The unique burial mounds, characterised by pyramid-like structures known as 'Moidams,' were used by the Tai-Ahom dynasty, which ruled Assam for approximately 600 years.
&nbsp;
The Tai-Ahom meticulously created these moidams, integrating the natural topography of hills, forests, and water, thus forming a sacred geography. These Moidams are vaulted chambers, often double-storied, with an arched passage for entry. The hemispherical mud mounds are layered with bricks and earth, reinforced by a polygonal toe-wall and an arched gateway on the west side.
Located in the foothills of the Patkai Ranges, the site contains the royal necropolis of the Tai-Ahom dynasty.
&nbsp;
Ninety moidams &ndash; hollow vaults built of brick, stone, or earth &ndash; of varying sises are found within this historic property.
&nbsp;

Atop the hemispherical mud mounds, layers of bricks and earth are meticulously laid.&nbsp;

After five consecutive sessions of decline, the bulls took charge, pushing the benchmark indices back into the green. A sharp rally in metal and pharma stocks fueled the recovery, with the Sensex rising by 0.17% to 80,177 and the Nifty climbing 0.24% to 24,464 on Friday.

&nbsp;The market saw 1,939 shares advancing, 525 shares declining, and 127 shares remaining unchanged.

"Post-budget, I believe the markets have entered a corrective phase. This correction is more time-based rather than price-based, meaning the index remains within a range. During this period, we see a lot of stock-specific action on both sides," commented a market analyst. Despite the underperformance of the banking sector, other sectors like oil and gas showed strength.

On Thursday, the Metal index emerged as the best performer, led by Hindalco and Tata Steel, which rebounded after a previous day&rsquo;s dip. The Pharma and Healthcare indices also posted gains, each rising nearly 1%. Large-cap pharma stocks, which have seen significant consolidation over the past six months, contributed to the rally.

Among the 13 indices, the Bank Nifty was the only laggard, dragged down by ICICI Bank, Federal Bank, and Axis Bank. "In the near term, banks are likely to underperform due to subdued earnings from major lenders like Axis Bank," noted an expert.

Top gainers on the Nifty included Hindalco, Bharti Airtel, LTIMindtree, Coal India, and Shriram Finance. On the losing side were Tech Mahindra, IndusInd Bank, Tata Consumer Products, Maruti Suzuki, and Axis Bank.

Migraine is many things, but one thing it&rsquo;s not is &ldquo;just a headache&rdquo;.
&nbsp;
&ldquo;Migraine&rdquo; comes from the Greek word &ldquo;hemicrania&rdquo;, referring to the common experience of migraine being predominantly one-sided.
&nbsp;
Some people experience an &ldquo;aura&rdquo; preceding the headache phase &ndash; usually a visual or sensory experience that evolves over five to 60 minutes. Auras can also involve other domains such as language, smell and limb function.
&nbsp;
Migraine is a disease with a huge personal and societal impact. Most people cannot function at their usual level during a migraine, and anticipation of the next attack can affect productivity, relationships and a person&rsquo;s mental health.
&nbsp;
What&rsquo;s happening in my brain? The biological basis of migraine is complex, and varies according to the phase of the migraine. Put simply: The earliest phase is called the prodrome. This is associated with activation of a part of the brain called the hypothalamus which is thought to contribute to many symptoms such as nausea, changes in appetite and blurred vision.
&nbsp;
Next is the aura phase, when a wave of neurochemical changes occur across the surface of the brain (the cortex) at a rate of 3&ndash;4 millimetres per minute. This explains how usually a person&rsquo;s aura progresses over time. People often experience sensory disturbances such as flashes of light or tingling in their face or hands.
&nbsp;
In the headache phase, the trigeminal nerve system is activated. This gives sensation to one side of the face, head and upper neck, leading to release of proteins such as CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide). This causes inflammation and dilation of blood vessels, which is the basis for the severe throbbing pain associated with the headache.

What can you do about the acute attack? 
&nbsp;
A useful way to conceive of migraine treatment is to compare putting out campfires with bushfires. Medications are much more successful when applied at the earliest opportunity (the campfire). When the attack is fully evolved (into a bushfire), medications have a much more modest effect.
&nbsp;
Aspirin For people with mild migraine, non-specific anti-inflammatory medications such as high-dose aspirin, or standard dose non-steroidal medications (NSAIDS) can be very helpful. Their effectiveness is often enhanced with the use of an anti-nausea medication.
&nbsp;
Triptans For moderate to severe attacks, the mainstay of treatment is a class of medications called &ldquo;triptans&rdquo;. These act by reducing blood vessel dilation and reducing the release of inflammatory chemicals.
&nbsp;
Triptans vary by their route of administration (tablets, wafers, injections, nasal sprays) and by their time to onset and duration of action.
&nbsp;
The choice of a triptan depends on many factors including whether nausea and vomiting is prominent (consider a dissolving wafer or an injection) or patient tolerability (consider choosing one with a slower onset and offset of action).
&nbsp;
As triptans constrict blood vessels, they should be used with caution (or not used) in patients with known heart disease or previous stroke.
&nbsp;
Gepants Some medications that block or modulate the release of CGRP, which are used for migraine prevention, also have evidence of benefit in treating the acute attack. This class of medication is known as the &ldquo;gepants&rdquo;.
&nbsp;
Gepants come in the form of injectable proteins (monoclonal antibodies, used for migraine prevention) or as oral medication (for example, rimegepant) for the acute attack when a person has not responded adequately to previous trials of several triptans or is intolerant of them.
&nbsp;
They do not cause blood vessel constriction and can be used in patients with heart disease or previous stroke.
&nbsp;
Ditans Another class of medication, the &ldquo;ditans&rdquo; (for example, lasmiditan) have been approved overseas for the acute treatment of migraine. Ditans work through changing a form of serotonin receptor involved in the brain chemical changes associated with the acute attack.
&nbsp;
However, neither the gepants nor the ditans are available through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for the acute attack, so users must pay out-of-pocket, at a cost of approximately A$300 for eight wafers.
&nbsp;
What about preventing migraines? 
&nbsp;
The first step is to see if lifestyle changes can reduce migraine frequency. This can include improving sleep habits, routine meal schedules, regular exercise, limiting caffeine intake and avoiding triggers such as stress or alcohol.
&nbsp;
Despite these efforts, many people continue to have frequent migraines that can&rsquo;t be managed by acute therapies alone. The choice of when to start preventive treatment varies for each person and how inclined they are to taking regular medication. Those who suffer disabling symptoms or experience more than a few migraines a month benefit the most from starting preventives.
&nbsp;
Almost all migraine preventives have existing roles in treating other medical conditions, and the physician would commonly recommend drugs that can also help manage any pre-existing conditions. First-line preventives include: tablets that lower blood pressure (candesartan, metoprolol, propranolol) antidepressants (amitriptyline, venlafaxine) anticonvulsants (sodium valproate, topiramate).

Some people have none of these other conditions and can safely start medications for migraine prophylaxis alone.
&nbsp;
For all migraine preventives, a key principle is starting at a low dose and increasing gradually. This approach makes them more tolerable and it&rsquo;s often several weeks or months until an effective dose (usually 2- to 3-times the starting dose) is reached.
&nbsp;
It is rare for noticeable benefits to be seen immediately, but with time these drugs typically reduce migraine frequency by 50% or more.
&nbsp;
&lsquo;Nothing works for me!&rsquo; In people who didn&rsquo;t see any effect of (or couldn&rsquo;t tolerate) first-line preventives, new medications have been available on the PBS since 2020. These medications block the action of CGRP.
&nbsp;
The most common PBS-listed anti-CGRP medications are injectable proteins called monoclonal antibodies (for example, galcanezumab and fremanezumab), and are self-administered by monthly injections.
&nbsp;
These drugs have quickly become a game-changer for those with intractable migraines. The convenience of these injectables contrast with botulinum toxin injections (also effective and PBS-listed for chronic migraine) which must be administered by a trained specialist.
&nbsp;
Up to half of adolescents and one-third of young adults are needle-phobic. If this includes you, tablet-form CGRP antagonists for migraine prevention are hopefully not far away.
&nbsp;
Data over the past five years suggest anti-CGRP medications are safe, effective and at least as well tolerated as traditional preventives.
&nbsp;
Nonetheless, these are used only after a number of cheaper and more readily available first-line treatments (all which have decades of safety data) have failed, and this also a criterion for their use under the PBS.&nbsp;

Migraine 101: What happens and how to treat it

Parle has once again clinched the title of the nation's top brand for in-home consumption, according to Kantar&rsquo;s annual Brand Footprint India 2024 report.&nbsp;

For the twelfth time in a row, Parle's buttery biscuits have solidified their place in the hearts (and pantries) of Indian consumers.
&nbsp;
The Kantar report ranks the most chosen FMCG brands, both for in-home and out-of-home consumption, based on Consumer Reach Points (CRPs).
&nbsp;
These CRPs are calculated by considering the actual purchases made by consumers and the frequency of these purchases within a calendar year. This year, CRPs continued to grow at a healthy rate of 7 percent.
&nbsp;
Over the past five years, CRPs have surged by nearly 33 percent, although this year&rsquo;s growth is a tad slower than last year's pace. The report noted a general slowdown in CRPs across most sectors, with dairy being the sole exception.

Parle&rsquo;s continued reign at the top is followed by other household names: Britannia, Amul, Clinic Plus, and Tata Consumer Products.

When it comes to out-of-home beverage choices, Thums Up, Frooti, Amul, Maaza, and Bisleri were the five most chosen brands in India.

&ldquo;Consumer choice is a very reliable strength test for a brand across market conditions. As we see over the years, consumers are making increasing trips for purchase which adds to their options and in turn their choices. This is reflected in the constant increase in CRPs,&rdquo; said K Ramakrishnan, Managing Director for South Asia at Kantar&rsquo;s Worldpanel Division.

Parle remains India's favorite FMCG brand

Lady in the Lake opens with a classic mystery premise: a man unceremoniously dumping a female corpse under a midnight blue sky. Less conventionally, it is narrated by the voice of Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), the dead woman herself. In this speech, Cleo directly addresses Maddie Morgenstern (Natalie Portman), the woman who will later play investigator, for having professed to care about her, but &ldquo;truth is, you came at the end of my story and turned it into your beginning.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
While spiking the viewer&rsquo;s interest, such an opening also challenges how tales of murder are more usually framed. When told through the activity of an investigator, a victim&rsquo;s story can only be pieced together through fragments of evidence. By contrast, this drama will be all about agency, notably the agency of women constrained by the ties of family and community.
&nbsp;
An Apple Original, Lady In Lake was adapted and directed by Alma Har&rsquo;el (Honey Boy), and is based on a novel by Laura Lippmann that was itself inspired by two historical murders.
&nbsp;
The action is set in Baltimore in 1966, a divided city made feverish with civil rights tensions and in which a young Jewish girl, Tessie, disappears during a Thanksgiving parade. While we know Maddie will investigate Cleo&rsquo;s death at some point, this narrative line is postponed. Instead, the the first few episodes of the series parallel the events in both their lives during the period leading up to Cleo&rsquo;s death.
&nbsp;
Maddie is a bored, troubled and affluent Jewish housewife, who once dreamed of becoming a journalist. Cleo is an African-American woman struggling to hold down several jobs and bring up two sons, exasperated by her work-shy husband, Slappy (Byron Bowers).
&nbsp;
The two women&rsquo;s lives begin to intersect in ways that are significant, but of which are not immediately aware. One early instance comes when their eyes make fleeting contact as Maddie chooses a dress modelled by Cleo, who is working as a live mannequin in a department store window. The deference paid by the shop staff to Maddie reveals the unequal power that each woman enjoys. However, later incidents reveal similarities in the way each is held back or propelled towards a different outcome.
&nbsp;
Maddie escapes her marriage, leaving her son behind and moving into a flat in the relative freedom of a black district. At the same time, Cleo is drawn reluctantly into a dangerous underground world in order to support her sons.
&nbsp;
1960s Baltimore is recreated with impressive scale. More intangibly, the mood of the time is conjured up through a pointedly evocative soul and jazz soundtrack, cutaways to billboards and scenes fleshed out with a hazy colour palette of moody blues and browns.
&nbsp;
Har&rsquo;el&rsquo;s direction and storytelling is visually ingenious and keenly paced.
&nbsp;
Occasional surrealist dream sequences offer insight into both women&rsquo;s private anxieties, and feature metaphors of innocence (lambs) or entrapment (fish, both in and out of tanks), often culminating in rhythmic, synchronised dance routines.
&nbsp;
Surrealism itself is mentioned explicitly, recalled in flashback by Maddie as a &ldquo;search for the marvellous&rdquo;, a way to convey the inexpressible. Aptly enough, it is by conveying something of the two women&rsquo;s inner lives and complicated cultural identities that the drama really finds its mark.
&nbsp;
For this, the show&rsquo;s &ldquo;mystery&rdquo; element seems to be a pretext, simply a way to link the two stories. The real gravitational pull on the plot, at least in the first few episodes, is the doomed playing out of events leading to the inevitable.
&nbsp;
Thematically, there is much reflection on Baltimore&rsquo;s social groups. There&rsquo;s a lot of active questioning of the black and white opposition that came to define relations in the city. To the black communities, Maddie is often, simply, white, but to white gentiles (non-Jewish) she is one of &ldquo;you people&rdquo;.
&nbsp;
More acutely, perhaps, Cleo is caught between rival promises of black power. She is drawn to her rightful &ldquo;destiny&rdquo; &ndash; supporting equality through desegregated education and other strategies advocated by councilwoman Myrtle Summer (Angela Robinson). But she must rely increasingly on the patronage of Shell Gordon (Wood Harris), a local gangster running the &ldquo;numbers game&rdquo; (an underground lottery) and owner of the Pharoah, a club at the heart of the city&rsquo;s jazz scene.
&nbsp;
It is relevant, I think, that feminists of that era were later accused of ignoring racial differences between women in order to write their own narrative of subordination as &ldquo;universal&rdquo;. In contrast, Lady in the Lake is keenly aware of those differences.
&nbsp;
Arguably, the series manages to highlight common ground in Cleo and Maddie&rsquo;s experiences while acknowledging crucial differences. Maddie&rsquo;s character has more agency, it seems, and more nuance is given to expressing her equivocal relationship with her own Jewishness. However, none of this lacks self-awareness, or surprises, and suggests that she too has something to learn.

Lady in the Lake: Surreal drama of two women's lives

President Droupadi Murmu and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan marking Kargil Vijay Diwas, paid their tributes to the courage and valour of the Indian armed forces. Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed annually on 26th July, marks India's victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. 
&nbsp;
In a message shared in Hindi on X, President Murmu expressed her deepest respect for the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice, writing, "Kargil Vijay Diwas is an occasion for a grateful nation to pay tribute to the courage and extraordinary valour of our armed forces".
&nbsp;
 "I pay tribute to each soldier who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting Mother India on the peaks of Kargil in 1999 and bow in reverence to their sacred memory. I am sure that all countrymen will draw inspiration from their sacrifice and valour. Jai Hind Jai Bharat!"

Meanwhile, CDS General Chauhan also paid tribute to the fallen soldiers and pointed out the significance of reforms within the armed forces to enhance their fighting efficiency and ensure they are always battle-ready.

He stressed the need to adopt new practices and discard obsolete ones, tailored to the unique challenges and environment of India.

While recalling the bravery of the soldiers during the Kargil conflict, General Chauhan stated, "Lessons learnt by shedding blood must not be forgotten, the mistakes must not be repeated, and the right lessons must be reinforced."

&ldquo;He added that the supreme sacrifices made by the bravehearts in the Kargil War would not be in vain. It will continue to inspire and motivate future generations of not only soldiers but also the youth of the nation".

Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a poignant reminder of the fierce counter-assault launched by the Indian Army to reclaim strategic heights in Ladakh that had been covertly occupied by Pakistani forces.

The conflict, which lasted for around three months, is remembered for its significant impact on India-Pakistan relations and the bravery of Indian soldiers.

On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of "Operation Vijay", declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh.&nbsp;

Tokyo Bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain will go head to head with Norway&rsquo;s Sunniva Hofstad in the first round of the women&rsquo;s 75 kg category. If she wins, she will go up against two-time Olympic medalist Li Qian, who previously defeated her in the Asian Games gold medal match.

Even if Lovlina manages to defeat Qian, the competition will intensify as a win would lead her to face fifth-seeded world silver medalist Caitlin Parker of Australia or Morocco&rsquo;s world champion fourth-seeded Khadija El-Mardi in the quarterfinals.

Lovlina's road to getting closer to the Olympic medal will not be easy as she has been handed tough draws in her 75 kg category at the Paris Olympics 2024.

But Lovlina's father, Tiken Borgohain, is confident in her daughter's victory.&nbsp;

"She has been practising hard, and I am confident that she will give her 100% to the game. We are confident that the result will be good. I know she will go great at the Olympics,' Tiken Borgohain told News Arena India.

Borgohain said that, at this point, she doesn't care about herself. "Her entire focus is on winning the matches. But when we talk on the phone, it is the usual conversation about food and not so much about the game. We try not to pressure her at all."

He added that Lovlina calls them every day and speaks with him, her mother, and her sister. "Most of our conversations revolve around kya khaya (what did you eat)."

Borgohain admitted that the family is slightly nervous because the stakes are very high.

"This is a huge game. This is her dream. She wants to change the colour of her medal -- from Bronze to Gold -- and she is very confident in her abilities. All Assamese and everyone in India is praying for her. We are confident she will bring gold this year," Borgohain said.

‘Gold is within Lovlina's reach’: Father Tiken Borgohain

Paul McCartney recently told The Times that he does eye yoga to avoid needing glasses. In the interview, he revealed that he was introduced to the eye exercises in India some years ago and has practised them ever since.

He believes that by exercising your eye muscles, you can reduce the need for glasses. Macca has demonstrated some of these techniques on YouTube.
&nbsp;
So what is eye yoga and can exercising your eyes really prevent the need for glasses?
&nbsp;
Different types of eye yoga have been practised for thousands of years. One example, tratak kriya, originating in India, is part of a yoga meditation practised in the belief that it develops higher states of consciousness and spiritual awakening. The Sanskrit word &ldquo;tratak&rdquo; means &ldquo;fix your gaze&rdquo; and involves staring at an object, such as a candle flame without blinking, until tears flow.
&nbsp;
More recently, in the late 19th century, Dr William Bates, a New York ophthalmologist, published The Bates Method for Better Eyesight Without Glasses, in which he made the case that eye exercises could avert the need for glasses.
&nbsp;
He believed that any glasses correction can be overcome by exercises involving eye movement and visualisation techniques, such as looking at an eye chart, focusing on letter contours, blinking frequently, closing the eyes to visualise the letter and imagining it blacker and sharper. The Bates eye exercises website still promotes his work today.
&nbsp;
However, the premise of Bates&rsquo; theory, that the eye changes its shape during movement and focus, is physiologically untrue.
&nbsp;
A 2018 study in the International Journal of Yoga compared visual acuity (the smallest letter that can be seen) and refractive error (a person&rsquo;s glasses prescription) in groups who practised either Bates exercises or trakata yoga for eight weeks. The study concluded that neither exercise made any difference to refractive error or visual acuity.

The Bates method has been rejected by ophthalmologists, not only because of lack of evidence but because it&rsquo;s potentially harmful, promoting &ldquo;solarisation&rdquo; (looking at the Sun), which is dangerous and overexposes the retina to sunlight.
&nbsp;
To understand why eye yoga or Bates-theory exercises won&rsquo;t correct your vision, it&rsquo;s helpful to understand the eye and how we see.
&nbsp;
Why do we need glasses
&nbsp;
The need for glasses arises when light rays are not focused on the retina. When the focus point occurs in front of the retina, this is myopia or short-sight. When the focus point is behind the retina, this is hypermetropia or long-sight.
&nbsp;
Astigmatism occurs when the curvature of the front surface of the eye is more like a rugby ball than a sphere, causing blur at all distances. And presbyopia is a normal ageing process where the eye&rsquo;s crystalline lens becomes stiffer and can&rsquo;t focus as well on things close by, which is why most people need reading glasses by middle age.
&nbsp;
Some of the eye&rsquo;s focusing is achieved by the cornea (the front surface of the eye). But the responsive focusing structure is the crystalline lens, which becomes more bulbous or convex when focusing on close objects and flatter when focusing further away.
&nbsp;
The size of the pupil and the convexity of the lens are controlled by ciliary muscles and ligaments inside the eye. In contrast, muscles involved in eye movement are on the outside of the eye (extraocular muscles).
&nbsp;
While internal and external eye muscles work together to some degree &ndash; reading involves both convergence and focus &ndash; moving your eyes to different positions of gaze makes no difference to the shape or size of the eye or focus. So the mechanics of using eye exercises to change the refractive power do not add up.
&nbsp;
Specific eye exercises are, however, often prescribed by orthoptists (experts who diagnose and treat defects in eye movement and problems with how the eyes work together) for certain conditions.
&nbsp;
One example is &ldquo;convergence insufficiency&rdquo;, where people experience double vision close up because of difficulty moving their eyes inwards. Practising smooth pen convergence, where your eyes follow a pen moving slowly towards your nose, can help.
&nbsp;
When adults too young for reading glasses struggle with near focus, this can be improved by focusing on a small letter or text, held and moved slowly towards the nose.
&nbsp;
It&rsquo;s also normal for adults to find looking far upwards increasingly difficult with age. We look up a lot as little children, meeting the gaze of adults around us. But eye muscles fatigue without practice, so unless you have a job or hobby that requires this, such as snooker, looking far upwards might become uncomfortable as you get older.
&nbsp;
But while such exercises might help some aspects of vision, evidence is lacking to support any significant delay to presbyopia through exercises.
&nbsp;
Understandably, people want to look after and improve their eyes and vision. Eye yoga won&rsquo;t hurt your eyes, as long as you only do it for a couple of minutes and then relax the muscles by gazing into the distance afterwards. But other lifestyle changes might help your eyes more.
&nbsp;
A regular optometrist appointment (usually every year for children and every two years for adults) to check your glasses prescription, eye pressure, and retinal and eye health ensures any early signs of diseases such as glaucoma can be detected and treated.
&nbsp;
Taking regular breaks from screens helps reduce eye dryness. You could follow the 20:20:20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look more than 20 feet away. Spending time outdoors is good for your eyes and children who spend time outside are less likely to become myopic.
&nbsp;
Eat well. Some evidence suggests that Mediterranean diets and green leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach help prevent macular degeneration. A diet rich in omega 3 may help dry eyes. Sleep well and wear good quality sunglasses in sunlight.
&nbsp;
If you suffer from dry eyes or use screens for long periods, meibomian gland massage could help you &ndash; a simple technique where a warm compress to the eyelid is followed by gentle downwards eyelid massage, to coax the oil produced in the eyelids towards the eye surface, making it more comfortable. Read in good light and, if possible, read large volumes of text on a computer rather than a phone.
&nbsp;
Eye yoga won&rsquo;t change or eliminate your need for glasses, but there are other ways to take care of your eyes and vision.

India’s top medal prospects for 2024 Paris Olympics

Using radar, a NASA spacecraft, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), has confirmed the existence of caves beneath the lunar surface. Here&rsquo;s why such geological features will be key for establishing a base on the Moon and what they can tell us about Earth and our Moon&rsquo;s shared cosmological origins.

Lunar orbiting satellites first spotted pits on the Moon&rsquo;s surface decades ago. Many of these were thought to be openings that connected to substantial underground tunnels that form through volcanic processes, but only now has this been confirmed through the analysis of radar data.
&nbsp;
Some of the tunnels thought to exist on the Moon are expected to be lava tubes, which are also found on Earth. When molten lava flows out of the ground, the lava stream eventually cools and hardens into a crust. The lava inside is still molten, and continues to flow. Once the lava has flowed away, it leaves an empty tunnel called a lava tube. These formation processes are thought to be be very similar on the Earth and the Moon.

The data used in the latest study was collected in 2010 by LRO but only recently analysed using state of the art signal processing techniques. Radar (electromagnetic waves of 12.6cm wavelength) fired at acute angles towards these lunar pits, partially illuminated the shadowed subterranean areas to generate measurable radar echo signals.

The timing and amplitude of the reflected signals allowed researchers to compare with simulations and build up a picture of the underground terrain. Data indicate that the largest &ldquo;Mare Tranquillitatis&rdquo; pit leads to a cave 80 metres long and 45 metres wide: an area equivalent to around half a football pitch.

It is likely that the lunar surface is home to hundreds of such caves. It is widely thought that around 4.5 billion years ago, a young Earth violently collided with a Mars-sized proto-planet, splitting our youthful planet into the Earth and Moon system we have today.

After this high energy impact, the Moon may have molten. It is therefore hardly surprising that caves of seemingly volcanic origin, bearing striking similarities with volcanic caves here on Earth, are present on the Moon. However, we don&rsquo;t need to worry about astronauts dealing with the dangers of a volcanic eruption; volcanic activity on the Moon petered out about entirely around 50 million years ago.

A home from home?
&nbsp;
On Earth, we live in an unusually fortuitous environment, which protects us from threats from outer space. For example, Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, is well placed to gravitationally drag asteroids away from Earth. This minimises the frequency of cataclysmic asteroid collisions with our planet &ndash; such as the one that spelled the end of the dinosaurs.
&nbsp;
One less obvious threat to life on Earth is ionising radiation. The whole solar system is constantly bathed in a soup of charged particles called galactic cosmic rays, which are accelerated to huge speeds by distant supernova explosions, sending them on a collision course with Earth.

In addition, periodic events called coronal mass ejections from our own sun fling highly energetic particles in our direction in much larger numbers, but on a less frequent basis.
&nbsp;
The Earth&rsquo;s magnetic field protects us from this radiation to a large degree, by funnelling the charged particles towards the north and south poles. This is the origin of aurora borealis and australis that light up the night sky at high latitudes. The Earth&rsquo;s thick atmosphere also protects us, but we still get some exposure: a return transatlantic flight, where we are higher up in the atmosphere, gives the traveller a dose of radiation equivalent to five X-ray scans.

Now spare a thought for our Moon, which possesses neither an atmosphere nor notable magnetic field. Far from being a &ldquo;sea of tranquility&rdquo; (the name of the site of the first human landing on the Moon in 1969) the lunar surface is constantly bombarded by high energy radiation.
&nbsp;
This poses a serious challenge for populating a Moon base with humans. Astronauts bouncing about on the lunar surface will soak up about 10 times more radiation than experienced on a transatlantic flight and about 200 times what we get on Earth&rsquo;s surface.
&nbsp;
Although our bodies can deal with the generally harmless low levels of background radiation we experience on Earth, exposure to high levels of ionising radiation can have serious health implications. When ionising radiation interacts with the body, it can ionise the atoms contained within cells, stripping them of electrons. This damage can sometimes prevent DNA from replicating properly, and in extreme cases, can cause cell death.
&nbsp;
For these reasons, any Moon base must provide adequate radiation shielding to protect its inhabitants. However, radiation shielding is best provided by dense material, which is expensive to transport to the Moon from Earth.
&nbsp;
Hence, naturally shielded areas, like the recently discovered caves, are being earmarked as possible locations for human habitation on the Moon. These caves would afford its residents a whopping 130 to 170 metres of solid rock shielding &ndash; enough to halt even the highest energy radiation.
