Bharatiya Janata Party and Trinamool Congress leaders clash outside a polling booth in West Bengal’s Murshidabad, claim sources.

Known for its silk weaving industry, Murshidabad is witnessing the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections, along with three other Parliamentary constituencies in the state — Jangipur, Malda Uttar and Malda Dakshin.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC had registered victories in Jangipur and Murshidabad out of the four constituencies.

Violence during polls and deaths have unfortunately become recurring themes in Murshidabad district during panchayat polls since 2003.

Locals have voiced concerns over key issues such as jobs and corruption at the local level.

There are allegations of illegal voting by individuals from Bangladesh, as well as concerns regarding illegal sand mining and cow smuggling to Bangladesh.

Apart from its political significance, Murshidabad is known for its silk worldwide.

The constituency is also noted for its brass and bell metalware.

Historically, Murshidabad was a city and the capital of Bengal until the British defeated Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula in the battle of Plassey in 1757.

The district boasts one of the largest international boundaries with Bangladesh compared to other districts of the state.

In the 2024 elections, Murshidabad seat is expected to witness a triangular contest between Abu Taher Khan of TMC, Gouri Sankar Ghosh of the BJP, and MD Salim of the Left party.

While incumbent MP Abu Taher Khan is seeking to retain his seat, Gouri Sankar Ghosh of the BJP, elected as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Murshidabad constituency in May 2021, has been advocating for development in the region.

He has also appealed for the status of Union territory for Murshidabad, alleging a conspiracy by the state government to erase its historical importance.
