An SUV carrying an electronic voting machine partially sank into a river after water level rose suddenly washing away a mechanised boat that was ferrying the vehicle in Assam’s Lakhimpur constituency on Friday, officials said. The driver and the polling officer of the vehicle managed to get out before water gushed into the vehicle, an official said. It was on its way to Amarpur area in Sadiya to replace an EVM after a technical glitch was detected in it as polling commenced in the morning, the official said.

People start queuing up outside polling stations. The weather gods seem to have favoured the candidates in the fray in Assam today, as voters queue up to cast their votes. There were concerns that rain might play spoilsport in the state today, but all good so far. Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur and Kaziranga Lok Sabha seats are going to the polls today. Fate of two of the most popular faces in Assam politics currently, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of the BJP and Congress's deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, will be sealed today. Both the leaders were also spotted casting their votes in Dibrugarh and Jorhat respectively.
