Labour Ministry proposes unified portal for unorganised sector workers

The Ministry of Labour is actively working on creating a unified portal that will serve as a one-stop destination for unorganised sector workers to avail themselves of various government schemes.

The eShram portal, touted as the largest national database of unorganised sector workers, currently houses information on 295 million individuals, encompassing categories such as migrant labourers, domestic workers, self-employed individuals, and small shopkeepers.

Upon registration, workers receive a Universal Account Number linked with their Aadhaar, facilitating their access to social security benefits.

The labour ministry has initiated discussions with 14 central government ministries and departments to explore the integration of their schemes onto the eShram platform.

An inter-ministerial meeting convened earlier this month saw participation from representatives of key ministries, including rural development, agriculture and farmers welfare, housing and urban affairs, and skill development and entrepreneurship.

The rationale behind this ambitious endeavour is to simplify the process for workers to identify and register for relevant schemes that apply to them.

With approximately 600 central government schemes collectively amounting to a staggering Rs 15 lakh crore in outlay, navigating through multiple portals for scheme registration has proven to be a daunting task for many workers.

Integration onto the eShram portal would not only ease the registration process but also enable targeted delivery of schemes by respective administrative ministries, ensuring optimal utilization of allocated resources.

Currently, workers registered on the eShram portal can access a curated list of 1,700 schemes to ascertain their eligibility.

The portal has already been seamlessly integrated with the One Nation One Ration Card scheme, with data from eShram being utilized to identify and issue ration cards to beneficiaries.
