Vaishnaw stresses need for political consensus on AI

Union Minister for IT and Electronics, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced on Wednesday that discussions regarding regulations for Artificial Intelligence (AI) are currently underway, stressing the necessity of achieving a political consensus.

 

Speaking at the 'Global IndiaAI Summit', Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of societal understanding of both the potential and threats posed by AI. "All sections of society must fully understand the threats and potential of Artificial Intelligence only then we should approach legal action," he told reporters.

 

When questioned about the timeline for establishing AI regulations and safeguards, Vaishnaw reiterated that while discussions are in progress, achieving a political consensus is crucial. "Discussions are on... it requires political consensus," he said.

 

At the same event, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada, underscored India's leadership in AI innovation. "As the council chair of the Global Partnership on AI, India has been reinforcing its commitment to furthering and democratizing AI, and its associated benefits, ethically and responsibly," he stated.

 

Prasada outlined India's vision to "make AI in India" and "make AI work for India," advocating for collaborative efforts to harness AI to address challenges in key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and education.
