Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C has announced a new initiative to boost voter turnout in the state. On Monday, he revealed that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will receive an incentive of Rs 5,000 if they achieve a voter turnout increase of 10 percent or more compared to the 2019 elections. Additionally, BLOs at booths with voter turnout exceeding 75 percent will receive similar incentives.
This announcement was made during a meeting with the Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) and Social Media District Nodal Officers. The CEO emphasised the importance of increasing voter turnout and ensuring that every eligible voter participates in the electoral process.
The CEO outlined that BLOs who meet the target of a 10 percent increase in voter turnout will be rewarded with a Rs 5,000 cash prize and will be honoured at a state-level ceremony.
He stressed the necessity for BLOs to personally distribute Voter Slips and ‘Voting Invitation Cards’ door-to-door, ensuring they do not delegate this responsibility to other officers.
During the meeting, Sibin C commended the efforts of the BLOs and SVEEP teams for their dedication and excellent work so far. He urged them to maintain their efforts until the polling concludes to achieve the goal of “Is Vaar 70 Paar,” which aims for a voter turnout of 70 percent or more.
The CEO highlighted the crucial role of BLOs in ensuring a smooth and efficient electoral process. Their dedication is essential for maximising voter turnout and making sure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast their vote.
Additional CEO Harish Nayar also spoke during the meeting, emphasising the importance of documenting the initiatives taken by district SVEEP and social media teams.
This includes noting the facilities provided at Polling Stations, Model Booths, and booths managed by women and Persons with Disabilities (PwD). He also stressed the importance of collecting voter testimonials about their voting experiences. A detailed report on these efforts will be submitted to the Election Commission of India.
This initiative by the Punjab CEO aims to encourage greater participation in the electoral process, ensuring a higher voter turnout and a more robust democratic process in the state.
The incentives for BLOs are part of a broader strategy to engage and motivate officials on the ground, ensuring that voter engagement remains a top priority in the upcoming elections.
