Union Home Minister Amit Shah set to address rallies in Lakhimpur and Hojai, bolstering BJP's campaign in Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed on Friday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is slated to spearhead the campaign for the initial phase of Lok Sabha elections in the state on April 6.

Addressing mediapersons at the BJP state headquarters, Sarma disclosed that Shah's campaign itinerary includes appearances in the Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency and Hojai, falling under the Kaziranga seat.

"We have deliberated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaigning in the state with officials in New Delhi, and arrangements are being finalised. Detailed plans will be disclosed either tomorrow or the day after," Sarma elaborated.

Sarma himself is set to embark on his campaign trail in Assam from April 1, commencing with a cycle rally in Majuli.

"The candidates have already initiated their campaigns in their respective constituencies, each conducting 10 to 12 meetings daily," Sarma added.

He underscored the significance of this year's campaign, highlighting the socio-economic survey being conducted by booth committees to identify individuals inadvertently excluded from government welfare schemes.

"The compiled lists will be submitted post-election, and we are committed to ensuring that all entitled beneficiaries are covered by the schemes," Sarma affirmed.

When questioned about the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, Sarma indicated that pending issues require resolution and will be addressed post the Lok Sabha polls.

Regarding the BJP's electoral prospects in Assam, Sarma expressed confidence in securing victory in 11 seats comfortably out of the total 14 seats, foreseeing triangular contests with the Congress and AIUDF in Karimganj and Nagaon.

"The BJP's prospects in these constituencies are promising, and we are dedicated to emerging victorious," Sarma asserted.

Responding to the state Congress president Bhupen Borah's claim of assuming the chief ministerial role in 2026, Sarma suggested a potential political shift, stating, "He may attain such a position if he aligns with the BJP, but it's improbable while he remains in the Congress."

Sarma has previously hinted at Borah's prospective transition to the BJP by 2025.

Out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, BJP is contesting in 11, with its allies Asom Gana Parishad in two and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) in one.
