Arunachal & Sikkim vote for state & LS elections, voter turnout recorded over 65% in both states

92 Assembly seats and 3 Lok Sabha seats from Arunachal & Sikkim go to polls on Friday.

Voting for the 92 assembly seats in the state elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim today. Polling began at 7 am and will end at 6 pm, according to the Election Commission of India. The results will be announced on June 2. 

 

In Arunachal Pradesh, voter turnout was recorded at nearly 66 per cent. And in Sikkim, it was 67.95 per cent till 5 PM. 

 

The voting for the 60-member Assembly seat has started in Arunachal, whereas two Lok Sabha seats is going to polls on Friday too.

 

Assembly elections in 32 seats of Sikkim have also started on April 19 with the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections where Sikkim will have parliamentary elections in its lone seat.

 

In Arunachal Pradesh, where infrastructure and border area development are seen as major poll issues, 8,92,694 voters will decide the fates of 133 candidates contesting in 50 assembly seats.

 

Union minister Kiren Rijiju has been fielded contesting against former Congress chief minister Nabam Tuki in Arunachal West Lok Sabha seat.

 

In Sikkim, chief minister and SKM supremo Prem Singh Tamang, former CM and SDF chief Pawan Kumar Chamling are among the 146 candidates in fray for the assembly seats.

 

An estimated 4.64 lakh electorate, comprising 2,32,381 male voters and 2,31,545 female will be eligible to exercise their franchise in the state.

 

While peaceful voting was reported from Sikkim, supporters of two candidates clashed near a polling station in the Bameng constituency in East Kameng district of Arunachal police said.

 

The situation was brought under control and polling continued. Incidents of EVM damage were also reported from three polling stations in East Kameng, Kurung Kumey and Upper Subansiri districts, said the police.
