Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh on Monday said the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) strong electoral performance in Assam and West Bengal would have a positive impact on the party’s prospects in Manipur, which is scheduled to go to polls next year.

“BJP's outstanding performance in Assam and West Bengal elections will have a positive impact in the Manipur polls next year,” Singh told reporters here.

Referring to the results in West Bengal, he said the outcome reflected the democratic choice of the people. “The unexpected majority in Bengal is the choice of the people. India is a democratic country where all have the right to vote. I want to extend my wishes to the people of Bengal and Assam,” he added.

The remarks come amid indications of a strong showing by the BJP in Assam and West Bengal, which the party hopes will bolster its momentum ahead of upcoming elections in the Northeast.

On the demand for implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, the chief minister said the state government was working towards setting up a committee to examine the issue.

“While the Assembly had previously adopted a resolution for its implementation, no steps had been taken so far,” Singh said.

The demand for NRC implementation has been raised by several Meitei civil society organisations, including the Coordination Committee on Manipur
Integrity (COCOMI), which has been advocating measures to identify alleged illegal immigrants in the state.

Singh also recalled that during the tenure of former chief minister N. Biren Singh, the Manipur Legislative Assembly had in August 2022 unanimously passed a resolution to establish a State Population Commission and to introduce and enforce the NRC.

The BJP leadership is expected to factor in its recent electoral performance in other states while preparing its strategy for the Manipur Assembly elections next year.
