State Water Resources Minister and Kerala Congress (M) leader Roshy Augustine, contesting from the Idukki Assembly constituency, climbed the Malayattoor hills in Ernakulam district, where the famous St Thomas Church is located at the hilltop.
Along with Augustine, thousands of devotees also undertook the pilgrimage to the Malayattoor hills. Many believers observed the day by avoiding luxuries and physical comforts and attended special prayer services in churches across the state.
Devotees were seen climbing the hill carrying wooden crosses of different sizes on their shoulders and in their hands as part of the religious observance.
According to tradition, the hill is believed to have been visited by Apostle St Thomas in AD 52. Church leaders, in their Good Friday messages, prayed for peace, harmony, and unity across the world.
Large numbers of devotees gathered in churches from early morning to participate in rituals and prayers. They remembered the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ nearly 2,000 years ago.
Good Friday services were organised across Kerala in churches belonging to different Christian denominations, reflecting unity among the faithful.
Hundreds of devotees participated in ‘Way of the Cross’ processions organised by churches, walking with wooden crosses to commemorate the final journey of Christ.
The day was observed as one of prayer, reflection, and repentance in Christian households, where families refrained from worldly comforts to honour the sacrifice and suffering of Jesus Christ.
