In a striking display of grassroots outreach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unscheduled halt at a roadside snack stall in Jhargram town, stepping out of his SUV amid sweltering humidity to sample jhalmuri, a popular local delicacy.
Breaking away briefly from his tightly guarded convoy, the Prime Minister walked up to the modest stall and asked the vendor to prepare a packet. Once served, he tasted the snack in a simple manner, first taking a portion into his palm before eating. His reaction suggested clear approval. “Bahut badiya banaya hai aap (you have made it very tasty),” he told the shop owner, Vikram Kumar Shaw.
The unexpected pause came shortly after Modi concluded a rally at Jhargram Stadium, which was attended by over 30,000 people. According to police, his motorcade left the venue around 3:30 pm en route to the helipad. During the roughly two-kilometre journey, under the close protection of the Special Protection Group (SPG), the Prime Minister abruptly stopped midway, catching security personnel off guard.
“The Prime Minister took all of us by surprise. We were not prepared for such a halt. However, we quickly secured the area as he stepped out and approached the stall. Hundreds of rally attendees were present along the route,” a police officer said.

For Vikram, the moment was surreal. Even half an hour after the Prime Minister’s departure, he remained visibly overwhelmed. “I could not believe my eyes when I saw him approaching my shop. I prepared the jhalmuri with my best effort. He liked it and even asked about my family and daily earnings,” Shaw said.
The young vendor added that he had raised slogans moments earlier as the convoy passed. “He smiled and waved. I had a feeling he might come to my shop, but I never imagined it would actually happen,” he said.
Political observers view the episode as a calculated yet effective attempt to connect with voters in West Bengal’s western belt, covering districts such as Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura and Paschim Medinipur. The region remains a crucial electoral battleground, where the BJP made significant gains in the 2019 general elections before the Trinamool Congress regained ground in 2021.
Modi also delivered a 45-minute speech at the rally, criticising the Mamata Banerjee-led government, urging voters to support the BJP and promising corruption-free governance in the state.
In the aftermath of the visit, Vikram’s stall has turned into a local attraction, with residents gathering to hear his account. What began as a brief roadside stop has quickly become a moment of local pride and a talking point in the state’s politically charged atmosphere.
