Singer Billie Eilish is all set to make her film acting debut with filmmaker Sarah Polley’s adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s iconic novel The Bell Jar.
Polley, who won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for her 2023 film Women Talking, will return to directing with this project, marking her first feature since that critically acclaimed movie. Eilish herself is a two-time Oscar winner, having earned Academy Awards for co-writing the original songs for Barbie and No Time to Die alongside her brother Finneas.
The Bell Jar is a semi-autobiographical novel written by American poet and author Sylvia Plath during her brief, but influential life. The story explores the emotional and psychological struggles of a young woman whose gradual descent into mental illness is shaped by intense societal pressures and expectations.

Now regarded as a literary classic, the novel was first published in 1963 under a pseudonym, shortly before Plath died by suicide at the age of 30.
Polley’s film adaptation of The Bell Jar will be backed by Focus Features and produced by Joy Gorman Wettels, known for her work on Little House on the Prairie and the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, along with Plan B Entertainment and StudioCanal.
Eilish previously stepped into acting with a role in the Prime Video series Swarm, which was co-created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, and starred Dominique Fishback. The multiple Grammy Award-winning singer is also co-directing the upcoming concert tour documentary Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft–The Tour alongside Avatar and Titanic filmmaker James Cameron.
