Christopher Nolan has shrugged off all the internet outrage associated with his new epic 'The Odyssey', asserting that whatever the public says now is meaningless since the audience has not even seen the movie yet. The Academy Award-winning director further clarified why he chose to use modern language and American accents in his movie based on the ancient epic poem.
Responding to the debate that emerged following the release of promotional material, Nolan noted that such scrutiny simply comes with the territory of high-profile filmmaking. He remarked that pre-screening discussions are always immaterial since none of the commentators actually know what the film is yet. The 55-year-old director compared the current online reaction to the intense public pressure he faced while helming his acclaimed 'Dark Knight' trilogy, explaining that his ten years working on Batman taught him to focus entirely on delivering a strong personal interpretation rather than reacting to public opinion.
Nolan recalled the initial widespread scepticism that met the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker in 'The Dark Knight', given the actor's previous association with romantic comedies. Ledger went on to win a posthumous Academy Award for the role. Nolan emphasised that fans ultimately appreciate the sincerity of an attempt to put the best possible version of a story on screen, adding that adaptation is fundamentally about doing something distinct from how others might approach the material. He defended the use of modern speech patterns by arguing that the ancient world is often over-formalised purely because it is old, whereas Homer's original poem is actually earthy, grounded, and accessible.
The production has faced specific social media backlash regarding its casting choices. Digital creator Matt Walsh criticised the casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy on the platform X, with tech billionaire Elon Musk replying in agreement, while other online commentary mocked the inclusion of Elliot Page as Sinon. 'The Odyssey', which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 17, features a star-studded ensemble cast. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus on his long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, reunited with his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, and his son Telemachus, portrayed by Tom Holland. The cast also features Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Travis Scott, and Charlize Theron.
