Global music icon Madonna has revealed that her daughter, Lourdes Leon, has long been hesitant about collaborating with her because she wanted to build her own identity rather than be seen as benefiting from her famous mother's success.
Speaking during an interview, the 67-year-old singer Madonna said Leon has always been determined to establish herself on her own terms and avoid any perception of receiving special treatment because of her family background.
"She's been very reticent to work with me. She doesn't want to be perceived as my daughter taking advantage of her privilege," Madonna said. Madonna, whose career skyrocketed in the early 1980s with hits such as Holiday from her self-titled debut album Madonna before she cemented her status as a global superstar with Like a Virgin, said their first major creative collaboration happened only because Leon initiated the idea.
The mother-daughter duo has worked together on Madonna's upcoming 15th studio album, Confessions II, which is scheduled for release on July 3. According to the singer, the collaboration was not something she pushed for. Instead, it was Leon who approached her with the proposal, believing it could help them express emotions they had both carried for years.
Madonna explained that her daughter suggested writing a song together as a way to strengthen their bond and work through unresolved feelings that had developed over the years. "She came to me and said, 'Let's write a song together. I think it'll be a very healing experience,'" Madonna recalled. The pop legend said she immediately embraced the idea, allowing both of them complete freedom to express themselves honestly through music.

"You say what you want to say, and I'll say exactly what I want to say," she said, describing the songwriting process as deeply personal and emotionally honest. Madonna also revealed that Leon had struggled with complex emotions throughout her teenage years, making the collaboration particularly meaningful for both of them.
"She had been, through her adolescence, struggling with those feelings for a long time," the singer said, adding that working together became a safe space where they could communicate openly in ways they perhaps hadn't before. The Grammy-winning artist was also full of praise for her daughter's musical abilities, saying Leon possesses a stronger singing voice than she does. "She has a much better voice than I do," Madonna said with admiration.
Lourdes Leon, the daughter of Madonna and her former partner, Cuban actor and fitness trainer Carlos Leon, has built a career in fashion, modelling and music while largely avoiding projects that might invite comparisons with her superstar mother. Madonna's latest comments highlight her daughter's determination to create her own path, even as the pair now share a meaningful artistic collaboration on Confessions II.
For Madonna, the experience of working with Leon has become far more than a professional milestone. It represents a deeply personal journey of healing, understanding and strengthening their relationship through music, making their first collaboration one of the most significant moments on the singer's upcoming album.
