Bollywood actress Nargis Fakhri’s sister, Aliya Fakhri, has been apprehended in relation to the deaths of her former boyfriend, Edward Jacobs, and his friend, Anastasia Star Ettienne, due to a fire in Queens, New York.
Officials claim that Aliya ignited a two-story garage, leading to the victims' deaths from smoke inhalation and severe burns. She has been denied bail and charged with their homicides.
District Attorney Melinda Katz characterised the incident as a deliberate act, asserting, “This defendant intentionally ended the lives of two individuals by igniting a fire that ensnared a man and woman in a fierce blaze." She further stated, “The victims tragically perished from smoke inhalation and severe burns," according to a report from Daily News.
While Nargis Fakhri has yet to address the situation, her mother has come forward in defence of Aliya.
She expressed scepticism regarding the allegations, stating, “I don't believe she would ever kill someone. She was a person who cared for everyone. She always tried to help others," as reported by various news sources.
As reported by The Post, Edward Jacobs’ mother disclosed that Jacobs and Aliya had ended their relationship a year before the unfortunate event. Despite their breakup, Aliya reportedly continued to seek him. The report further clarified that Jacobs and Ettienne were not romantically involved but were merely friends.
A crucial piece of evidence came from a witness at the scene of the crime who attempted to rescue Anastasia but had to leap over a barrier to escape the flames. The witness noted that Anastasia had re-entered the burning building to try to help Edward Jacobs.
The witness also claimed that Aliya and Edward had “an abusive relationship," which is thought to have contributed to the deadly fire.
