The recent piracy of the much-awaited movie 'Jana Nayagan' starring Vijay — an icon of Tamil cinema — has caused a storm of outrage throughout the Indian film industry. The powerful trio of Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Suriya has been at the forefront of this movement.
Directed by H Vinoth, the film has long been touted as Vijay’s cinematic swan song before his full-time transition into the political arena. Reports surfaced on Friday that the film had been leaked online, an incident that has left the fraternity both reeling and resolute.
Rajinikanth was among the first to voice his distress, taking to social media on Friday night to describe the breach as a source of genuine "shock and pain". Writing in Tamil, the veteran actor insisted that film organisations must unite against such theft and called upon the government to identify the culprits and hand down "severe punishment" to ensure such crimes do not become a recurring feature of the industry.
Kamal Haasan, a politician who had earlier been an actor, provided an even more harsh criticism. He said that the leak was only an outcome of a flawed process. This is because the movie had been entangled in a long legal battle with CBFC for months. He stressed that piracy is an assault on the collective effort of hundreds of technicians and the financial security of honest producers and theatre owners.
Suriya added his voice to the critical mass saying that it was “Heart-breaking and unfair” since it was cruel to see that a lot of passion from the team had been put into something and then ended up on their computers. He appealed to everyone to stop watching this leaked movie as it would be disrespectful to the art.
This is really bad news for KVN Productions since they poured in their investment to produce this film. Other individuals in the same industry such as Chiranjeevi have joined hands and are urging people to wait until the movie is released officially. Sources close to the production have confirmed that both civil and criminal proceedings are now being initiated against those involved in the unauthorised distribution of the film.
