Actor-politician Vijay on Monday cancelled his scheduled election campaign programmes in key Chennai constituencies after police-imposed time restrictions left insufficient windows for effective canvassing, party sources said.
According to sources in Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the party had sought permission to campaign from 11 am to 1 pm in Villivakkam and from 3 pm to 6 pm in T Nagar. However, police granted a much shorter time frame—12 pm to 1 pm in Villivakkam and 2 pm to 3 pm in T Nagar—with the approvals reportedly communicated shortly before the scheduled events.
Party insiders said the curtailed schedule made it logistically difficult for Vijay to travel between venues, especially in view of the large crowds expected at both locations. As a result, the campaign events were called off.
Sources added that Vijay had also planned to campaign later in the day in Anna Nagar and Virugambakkam, for which permissions had been sought in advance.
With less than 20 days remaining for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, political activity has intensified across the state. Vijay’s TVK is making its electoral debut, contesting all 234 constituencies and positioning itself against major players such as the DMK and the AIADMK.
Vijay himself is contesting from Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East) constituencies and has been actively campaigning across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in recent weeks.
Last week, he addressed rallies in Perambur and Kolathur but was unable to reach Villivakkam due to heavy crowd turnout and time constraints. Party functionary Aadhav Arjuna had also raised concerns over inadequate police arrangements during the Kolathur campaign.
Sources indicated that the latest permissions required Vijay to travel between Villivakkam and T Nagar within a tight one-hour window—an arrangement deemed impractical given the scale of public turnout. Navigating large crowds within such a limited timeframe made it unfeasible to adhere to the schedule.
Following the developments, the TVK leader decided to cancel the day’s campaign, expressing dissatisfaction over the restricted timings and reduced window allotted by the police.
